I was reading about the latest with WebAssembly last weekend and what I'm seeing is pretty exciting for the future of software development. I thought I'd share with you all what I've learned so far. If you've never heard of WebAssembly (or Wasm) before, here's a condensed version of what Wasm is most known for: 1) it was initially created as a runtime for the browser, but since the runtime is a stack-based virtual machine similar to the JVM, it can be used in other environments as well; 2) compilers exist in 40+ programming languages to compile code into a Wasm binary format that can be run in supported Wasm runtimes (like the ones included in most browsers); 3) this allows you to do things like write browser-based client apps in languages like C# instead of JavaScript. .NET has a really neat library called Blazor to help with this: https://lnkd.in/gvEuZPbg Wasm isn't new -- it's been around since 2015. So what's got me excited lately? There are some new things happening with WebAssembly System Interface, or WASI. WASI defines out APIs for "operating-system-like features" (think filesystems, sockets, etc.). WASI also isn't new, debuting in 2019: https://lnkd.in/gbiwpUge. You can read more on WASI here: https://lnkd.in/g3zqJ7zs But with these OS-like features through WASI, WebAssembly starts to become more viable for server-side usage. And for me, the most especially exciting development was the announcement of Docker support for Wasm back in October 2022: https://lnkd.in/g_twTz4q This allows devs to build a container without a standard OS like Linux or Windows. Your container image can run with just a single Wasm binary. So should you run to try Wasm+WASI with Docker today? Maybe, maybe not. It's currently a beta feature for Docker and Wasm still has more necessary features to add like garbage collection and threading.
