First Selectman Terry Rooney highly touts the benefits of OpenGov, a cloud-based government software system that simplifies filing, tracking, and accessing public records. The Town Council unanimously decided to purchase this new software after receiving testimony from Kathleen Gallagher, the town’s planning and zoning administrator, highlighting the inefficiencies of the current manual record-keeping process. Gallagher emphasized the challenges of the old coding system and the potential for human error when retrieving permits stored across different locations. Transitioning to OpenGov is expected to streamline operations, reduce errors, and save time for staff members like Morris, who acknowledged the significant benefits of the new system. Former Trumbull first selectman, Ray Baldwin, shared his positive experience with OpenGov after implementing it in Shelton. The software eliminated the use of paper applications, improved efficiency, and enhanced data accuracy for the city. Baldwin noted the enthusiastic response from residents, staff, and developers who appreciated the convenience of online transactions and streamlined processes. With over 2,000 municipalities nationwide and around 55 cities and towns in Connecticut already using OpenGov, its effectiveness and popularity continue to grow. It’s been a while since I attended an AMIA meeting and the #CIC24 Minneapolis meeting this week was energizing. I expect to be a regular given all that is happening with medical informatics and the growing power it has to drive care transformation. It’s an obvious growth area and AMIA is leading the charge. I had three takeaways. 🎯 Substantial and diverse work was covered on documentation burden, provider and nurse impact, and POC work on reducing these burdens. Inbasket, not surprisingly, was covered in half a dozen or more poster/sessions. With one exception, the work primarily focused on Epic’s AI-enabled solution. I'm looking forward to a lot more pilot work with this and other solutions, including those developed by leading healthcare systems. 🎯 It should come as no surprise that use of ML/AI/LLM was dominant, touching every area of care big and small. I expect this theme will consume all the oxygen in the room at future meetings and will inevitably drive rapid growth in the demand for informatics talent. BTW, my favorite session was “Prompt Engineering 101: Evidence-Based Practices for your Health System.” (Dong-han Yao, MD). A standing room only entertaining and highly informative presentation. It’s worth viewing if you missed it. 🎯 One of the first items that caught my eye at #CIC24 was the AMIA framing statement: “Being dedicated to turning innovation into practice-ready solutions that make an immediate impact on patient care.”  It would be great to see more provider-industry collaborations at this meeting to accelerate healthcare towards this vision. Looking forward to the #AMIA November meeting.
