Of the last 600 DVS Scores added to the DVS Baseball Injury Risk Model, 1.3% of pitchers have an optimal foot strike component score. Why is this relevant? Each deduction in the foot strike component score significantly amplifies a pitcher's likelihood of sustaining a major arm injury by 20.59%. Why only 1.3% of pitchers? Recent biomechanical data from DVS Scores show an ongoing disconnect between the trunk/spine and the throwing forearm moving into a weight-bearing foot strike. The disconnect commonly occurs after a pitcher initiates their delivery sequence toward the plate and the hands have separated from the glove.  Ideally, as the throwing hand reaches the bottom, the trunk/spine, elbow, and wrists will move back toward the center at a similar progression ( you can see this demonstrated in the attached video). Modern pitchers often maintain periods of flexion or remain static in the trunk and spine as they manipulate the throwing elbow and wrist under increased tension. This disconnection results in a timing misalignment between the onset of pelvic rotation and the positioning of the trunk/spine and throwing arm at this critical phase, the gateway. Increasing the 1.3% In a culture riddled with arm injuries, increased average velocity in pitchers is often to blame for its ability to increase torque on the throwing arm. But we want torque and want to preserve the velocity. We have to transfer the torque distribution differently by utilizing a greater impulse of the throwing arm on each pitch. The increased utilization of mass and leverage facilitates a greater impulse of the throwing arm, allowing it to produce force over a longer duration. Pitchers who consistently record low component scores at foot strike are often compelled to depend more heavily on the strength and speed of their throwing arm to sustain performance from one pitch to the next. When generating force from a suboptimal position at foot strike, there is an increase in the torque applied to the throwing arm. This pattern is evident in the data collected from a large population of MLB pitchers. The video highlights a progression I created as part of our Mechanics for Velocity and Performance program, which will be infused in our upcoming "The Physics of the Optimal Pitch." Using a tennis racket, a pitcher can feel the incorporation of the trunk and the throwing arm moving to the center. Upon acceleration, the racket helps drive greater thoracic extension, thus allowing upper mass to transfer over the center of mass into release. To help pitchers tolerate the higher torques of pitch velocity and sustain their performance while delaying major arm injuries, teaching and showing how to incorporate greater impulse of the throwing arm into higher output throwing will be crucial to helping amateur and professional baseball pitchers maintain value for longer. Impulse = F⋅Δt We are building the time scale to produce force into ball release. Think about a long onramp for a car build speed to merge onto the highway at higher speeds. Sequencing better earlier in the pitching delivery will allow your upper body mass and arm to be in a more optimal position at foot strike, generating a greater impulse into ball release. If you sequence poorly, you can still achieve high-pitch outputs, but there will likely be increased torsion and torque on the throwing elbow/shoulder; hence the volume of Tommy John surgeries in baseball. Over the last decade, I've used the Delivery Value System to help educate pitchers on how to sequence better through the pitching delivery to decrease the risk on their throwing arm, improve efficiency/timing, and ultimately tolerate the demands of throwing over their career. Additionally, as pitchers have improved their sequencing (inputs), pitch outputs have had a direct impact. This increase in pitch output metrics is primarily due to the ability to utilize greater mass and leverage into each pitch, thus increasing the impulse of the throwing arm. I've been heavily focused on arm impulse for the last several months and will begin to track and quantify it with a DVS X-ray. In November, after almost a two-year layoff, I started ramping up my throwing to test our mocap kit. In doing so, I've begun throwing more frequently and getting back into positions that allow for demonstration of arm impulse. If you watch the video comparison, you will notice my body and arm orient almost identically into a weight-bearing foot strike. However, as my trunk and arm progress into ball release, I can generate a greater arm impulse, indicative of the video's keyframes. In May's video, I'm allowing more lag time for my arm to create the force and release the baseball with my upper mass closer to home plate as my back foot stays anchored into the ground. This transformation is only possible with the proper alignment and stability of the rear foot and, eventually, the front foot to facilitate the greater impulse of each throw. As I scale up the intensity of throwing, I'll provide additional clips showcasing the speed of the joints and velocity of the pitch for further analysis and illustration of how to increase arm impulse. Tactically disciplined players can defeat those with elite technical foundation and lesser tactical discipline. In many cases there is a “right” shot at the “right time” based on tactical/physical/technical parameters like your court position, how the ball is arriving, how you arrive to the ball and other critical factors. Having a system of reference in place to diagnose and measure the success of your points/shots will develop and improve managerial point construction, anticipatory court positioning, decision making and the amount of points won in specific point circumstances. The shots we don’t execute on, there is tactical evidence as to why. Sometimes its mental, physical. Sometimes all of them, but in this case focusing on the tactical; your system of reference and the understanding and discipline to your system, improves your decision making as it ascertains to finding an advantage in the different situations you find yourself in on the court, for example where and how to play the ball from the position you’re in with how the ball is arriving to you and how you arrive to the ball. A master coach will reveal to you techniques, angles, perceptions and perspectives that can cause you to become versatile tactically, improve your effectiveness and consistency in the different circumstance of points. A player’s ability to learn based on important factors such as their open mindset, trust, relaxation and enjoyment will impact their rate of learning and developing skills. Player’s can look at Federer and say “he’s arriving to the ball moving backwards and playing an aggressive shot consistently”. When your technical foundations, reception of the ball tactically, and physicality is at a level where you can do that regularly in your own game style, that is what happens. But until then, you need to use your system of reference to be disciplined with to where tactically is the right shot to play here. To either keep the ball in play defending, countering, neutralising, building, attacking or finishing.
