Pope Francis raises some alarms about AI. https://lnkd.in/g5gxxCM6 I'd argue that we're already well down the rabbit hole of decisions being made absent a human touch or ethical concerns and that's long before the rise of "AI" as we're using the term today. But he has a good point. 2. As a CTO, writing code and building a streaming infrastructure has given me a unique perspective on what draws viewers to FAST streaming. Here’s what I’ve observed: 1. Cost Savings: The saturation of subscription services has led to subscription fatigue. While SVOD platforms are great, the costs add up quickly. FAST streaming provides a genuinely free alternative, saving viewers money even if it means watching a few ads. 2. Ad Tolerance: Viewers don't mind ads if it means free content. FAST services feature fewer ads per hour compared to traditional TV—only 8-14 minutes compared to 18 minutes on paid TV. 3. Lean-Back Viewing: Overwhelmed by too many choices on SVOD platforms? FAST’s linear programming lets viewers simply tune in and see what’s on, making it perfect for background noise or effortless viewing. 4. Single-Show Channels: FAST platforms often offer entire channels dedicated to popular series like CSI, Baywatch, and Fear Factor. This means endless streams of favorite shows without the hassle of picking specific episodes. In a recent interview, I was asked about the declining interest in strategy games over the last decade. Quantic Foundry adds data to the conversation but can't answer the fundamental question. They pose these, instead: 💡 Why do you think gamers have become less interested in strategic thinking and planning? Are there other potential causes that come to mind? 💡 Do you feel your attention span and ability to think deeply has changed since the emergence of social media and/or smartphones? 💡 Are there other documented changes in our media-consumption habits or cognitive metrics that you think might be related to this? 💡 Have you seen similar or related findings specific to gamers and games research?

Tinkering fuels innovation and curiosity. It allows us to truly understand the tools and systems we work with at a granular level. Recently, I've been tinkering with Rust, a language gaining popularity for building reliable, safe, and sustainable systems at scale. The best way to learn is by doing. So, I turned our simple summarization proof of concept, Distill, into a CLI leveraging Rust's performance and memory safety advantages. As builders, it's our responsibility to continuously look for optimizations in everything we do. To ask questions and challenge the status quo. To learn and be curious. "Since 2018, we have increasingly leveraged Rust for critical workloads across various [AWS] services like S3, EC2, DynamoDB, Lambda, Fargate, and Nitro, especially in scenarios where hardware costs are expected to dominate over time." We've seen a lot of success with Rust at AWS, including our work on Firecracker, on Lambda's container dataplane, and on many other systems we've built. I love the fact that we can get memory safety without compromising performance or efficiency. I also enjoy seeing how much less time my teams spend tuning runtimes or debugging memory issues. I also really appreciate this sentiment from Werner's post: "... this is not a call to rewrite everything in Rust. ... It’s about using the right tool for the right job. This means questioning the status quo, and continuously looking for ways to incrementally optimize your systems – to tinker with things and measure what happens." Make decisions about programming languages the same way you make all critical engineering decisions: with data!

Stop playing Tetris with your teams and projects. Investing heavily in meticulous planning to try and achieve the fantasy outcome of multiple teams, schedules, budgets, people, and projects aligning perfectly to meet your overly ambitious and tightly packed agenda is doomed to fail. The odds of that succeeding are slim-to-none yet, it's what we default to when there's so much we want to do. Do more by doing less! 1) Reduce WIP: Work on less things in parallel, not more. 2) Prioritize: Work on only the thing(s) that will deliver the most value the soonest. Will this guarantee success? No. But, the odds of success are orders of magnitude higher than trying to plan for a perfect game of Tetris. John Cutler's latest installment of The Beautiful Mess, "The Failure Threshold" explains this beautifully. How many of you have been in the following situation (pulled from his post): "If George and Ina each allocate 50% time to Project Thunder, and then Lenny does 10% time combined with moving the two open reqs to Team Apollo and hiring those roles in the next two months, we should—if we sort of combine Project Thunder and Project Inferno—be able to finish Thunder, Inferno, and chip away at Homestead so that when The Hex Pistols are done with the event streaming re-architecture and Project Kafka-esque, assuming Xenia approves the design document, we should be able to hit the deadline for Project Sycamore as promised in the 2023 annual plan."

The afternoon Keynote @ Stripe Sessions was Fireside Chat between Patrick Collison (CEO of Stripe) and Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA). Patrick was an excellent moderator — asked Jensen really probing, nuanced questions that Jensen answered with his usual sharp wit and unique (and impressively well rationalized) perspective. A couple of quotes among many that stuck with me: - “Current CPU installed market is $1 trillion of hardware, all of which will be upgraded to GPUs over the next 5 years. And I would estimate about another $1 trillion will be spent on top of that during the same time period as companies try to do more with AI. Add those together — and I think at least $2 trillion will be spent on GPUs in the next 5 years.” - “I like to go after Zero-Billion Dollar Markets — nonexistent markets that I envision & can rationalize well, but will be very hard, expensive & time-consuming to achieve.”

This tactic, in which A.I. companies promise wild new features and deliver a half-baked product, is becoming a trend that is bound to confuse and frustrate people. The $700 Ai Pin, a talking lapel pin from the start-up Humane, which is funded by OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, was universally panned because it overheated and spat out nonsense. Meta also recently added to its apps an A.I. chatbot that did a poor job at most of its advertised tasks, like web searches for plane tickets. Companies are releasing A.I. products in a premature state partly because they want people to use the technology to help them learn how to improve it. With artificial intelligence, companies are giving a preview of a potential future, demonstrating technologies that are being developed and working only in limited, controlled conditions. A mature, reliable product might arrive — or might not. The lesson to learn from all this is that we, as consumers, should resist the hype and take a slow, cautious approach to A.I. To all the early stage companies out there: If you recently discovered a competitor you didn't know about, or a company working on an adjacent category - one perspective is to welcome/embrace it. Alexandre Bouchard and Jack Bridger talk in depth about Scaling DevTools in new categories. "Not having a competitor is probably a bad sign. Having competition gives you a proxy to the value that you bring." At my first startup, tone messaging; we came across multiple companies who would eventually compete with us, and even companies that completely ripped off our marketing/product. It's hard not to be scared, intimated or mad. It surely is better, mentally, to view it as a compliment or validation. However, at the end of the day, you still have to beat them....
