  • Virtual Human™ - An Automated Virtual Environment for Computer-Aided Instruction and Biomechanical Analysis

Studies in Health Technology and Informatics Volume 18: Interactive Technology and the New Paradigm for Healthcare

A comprehensive anatomical virtual environment (AVE) of the human musculoskeletal system has been created for both biomechanics and computer-aided instruction (CAI) applications. A comprehensive anatomical virtual environment (AVE) of the human musculoskeletal system has been created for both biomechanics and computer-aided instruction (CAI) applications. It has been developed on the Silicon Graphics family of workstations using the Open Inventor™ object-oriented programming environment.

The anatomical virtual environment (AVE) consists of two components: 1)an anatomical database of geometric models which includes the NURBS surface models, hi-res polygonal models, image data, materials, and texture images; and 2)the AVE known as Virtual Human™ which includes both visualization software and virtual reality tools.

The visualization software allows for the display and query of anatomic geometric models for biomechanics simulation and computer-aided instruction (CAI). Key subsystems for biomechanics are the joints, deformation, and direct dynamics where CAI subsystems include database and the biomedical theater.

The anatomical database is comprised of non-uniform rational b-splines (NURBS) surface models of structures created from three medical imaging modalities: computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), and anatomical sectioning (AN). The use of NURBS surfaces will increase the real-time interactivity of the AVE compared to cumbersome volumetric or polygonal models.

  • Visualizing and evaluating 3D cross-sections

    Issued US 11468623

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for generating
    a cross-section of a 3D model are disclosed. An
example method includes determining a cross-section plane
intersecting the 3D model, performing ray tracing by passing
each of a plurality of rays through a corresponding pixel
of a viewing plane such that each ray intersects the cross-section
plane, determining one or more rays that are within
a threshold distance of the 3D model at their respective

    Issued US 11468635

Methods and apparatus to facilitate 3D object visualization and manipulation across multiple devices are disclosed. Example apparatus disclosed herein include a viewpoint determiner, a visible shard determiner, and a laminate assembler. The viewpoint determiner determines a viewpoint location of a viewpoint corresponding to a viewing device, the viewpoint location being in a reference frame of a three-dimensional (3D) model. The visible shard determiner determines a visible shard set of the 3D…

The visible shard determiner determines a visible shard set of the 3D model based on the viewpoint location. The laminate assembler generates a two-dimensional (2D) image of the visible shard set.
