So onto my friends in Transportation. This might actually be two posts, but I want you to understand. When I decide to go back it is going to be fun. What I have learned has made a huge impact on me and will for whatever operation I decide to work with. You make more of an impact on the efficiency of the store operation than anyone. I will preface the detailed explanations but saying that stores have strict labor plans and that is what delivery schedules are built around. They also have finite amount of space and when I say finite I mean small compared to the volume they sell. I ran the largest club in Utah, but I had one of the smallest backrooms and perishable space to hold as much as the smallest club. Onto the specifics: - Being late. One hour. No big deal right? Well my receiving team might have clocked out so what do we do now? I either make your driver wait 4-5 hours or I pull a manager from the floor to unload just to add to the congestion in the back room. What does congestion cause? Increased risk of accidents and product damage. Now lets say I was waiting on some items because I was running low. Perishable freight is brought in JIT. I dont want three weeks worth of deli products in my cooler. Now the store is open and I have to decide is it worth taking associates from other areas to take that product onto the floor to stock because my inventory levels are so low that the merchandise of that product is unsightly. Most likely I am stocking and later in the day now I have to figure out how to make up for the areas I took staffing away from. Now I am putting customers at risk with all the equipment out on the floor. Or I am taking the time in the backroom to down stack everything causing more time lost. Day late.... I am not happy. I may be going through a planogram change. What is a planogram? It is the layout set for the upcoming season so we can maximize the changing buying habits. Now I have to replace the item with another item and hope when I get that product in my team is on it remembering we are off by one to two products. Simple but wasteful to time and energy. When you are talking perishable planograms the inventory flows with the planogram and remember we do not get extra cause it will go bad. I do not have a great substitute option because we are changing the whole layout so now I have to fake the merchandising to make look decent. Remember shoppers are visual. When it is not appealing, they wont buy. -Early is no big deal right? I used to think so. Its in your parking lot. Relax. Remember me saying I had the largest club in Utah, but not more space? If you are live unload store it does not matter if it is Ambient or Perishable, you are throwing off the labor plan. I already explained with lates, but lets get to where it really hurts, Perishable loads. Reminder tight labor plans so I may make you wait. Not good for you or your driver's clock.... Part 3 coming.
