“Diego Sanchez and I attended the University of Georgia together, however, while he took the PR route, I chose journalism. Several years later, we met again, this time in Boston. By now, I knew the depth and skills a good reporter needed. I never imagined that someone could work both the editorial and PR sides of communication without crossing the line. It wasn't long before I saw it in action. I watched as Diego combined solid news writing with public relations rhetoric. I saw him work within one of the tightest deadline I've ever encountered, while under one of the most stressful situations I've seen. A crisis at one of his company's hotels in Spain need a statement at 3 a.m. — and they needed it now. Despite the complexity of the situation, Diego dictated a comprehensive release without missing a beat. It served the news reporters and created a reprieve for his company. That is just one example among many. Over the years, I've learned that Diego Sanchez is a remarkable man who is as resourceful as he is intelligent. He never lets an opportunity escape without leaving his mark of improvement. A talent? A gift? I can't say for sure, I just know it's there.”

How can you manage conflicts of interest when consulting with communities?
Re conflicts of interest - Keep clear ethics, understanding, and language content and context: 1) Focusing on and following personal and professional ethics as I learn and center on each party's place and position is how I avoid being caught in a web of conflict of interest. 2) Making certain to understand what "Yes" means before agreeing to be involved is key. 3) Defining the difference between "conflict" and "conflict of interest" keeps things clear for me.
