It became clear immediately that the memorial needed to proactively retain Jason’s memory while reaching out to young professionals as Jason had always done. The choice was made to establish a memorial leadership scholarship in Jason’s name that would be used to sponsor an Associate AIA Member of the Region to attend the annual AIA Grassroots Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C and the WMR Conference hosted by one of the six state Components annually. The WMR intends to establish this as a sustaining scholarship that would be awarded every year as part of the Western Mountain Region’s Annual Awards Program.

Little Elm resident Derwin Broughton, project manager for Ron Hobbs Architects, is the first place winner of the Gus Garcia Park Design Competition. The competition was created to provide an opportunity for young design professionals to present ideas for developing Gus Garcia Park, a 47 acre parkland located in the rapidly growing northeast section of Austin, Texas.

Named in honor of Gus Garcia, Austin’s 49th mayor and a longtime environmental advocate, the park will be the site of the Gus Garcia Recreation Center, neighborhood playgrounds, nature trails, and other community amenities.

Fifteen entries were submitted for the competition, which was open to architectural design professionals with less than 10 years of professional experience. Winners of the competition were selected by an individual panel of judges.

Broughton presented his winning master plan at a public meeting followed by an awards ceremony on May 12 at the Gus Garcia Park in Austin. His plan features a blend of design principles and site ideas respectful of the existing environment to create a cross-generational and multicultural oasis for the community. His three-phased, comprehensive design includes a water park, playing fields, butterfly garden, pavilions, and an amphitheater.

The Young Architects Forum (YAF), a program of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the College of Fellows (COF), is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects (within 10 years or less after licensure). The YAF is an outgrowth of a 1989 AIA Grassroots program involving 36 young architects from around the nation assembled by then AIA President Ben Brewer, Jr., FAIA. The issues raised and potential benefits visualized at that meeting led to the 1991 formation of a national YAF Advisory Committee, to encourage the development of national and regional programs of interest to young architects and the creation of YAF groups within local chapters. Throughout its history, the YAF has had three overriding goals: To make AIA membership valuable to young architects and develop the future leadership of the profession. To encourage professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups. To build a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute.
