Things I learned during the Army retirement process that may not be covered in SFL-TAP and VA briefs. Experiences may differ. -You will most likely not receive your first retirement check for two months. Your last paycheck may be delayed up to 10 days. I received mine a week later than usual. -When you are awarded your VA disability rating, you will not receive any compensation check until a month after your award date. You will not be compensated for the month of your award date. My award date was April 1 and my first compensation check will be awarded at the end of May to cover the month of May. I will not receive compensation for April despite retiring on March 31. VA math doesn't make sense to me 🤣 Recommendations: -Be proactive in everything! Follow up often. Read the materials given to you! I'm 100% disabled and that opens up a lot of options. I'm fully covered by the VA for medical and dental, I have a disabled vet license plate and will be exempt from NC property taxes starting next year, to name a couple benefits. -Save money now- cut out 'niceties' if you need to. Anticipate pay delays and issues- you prolly had to do that during your career. -I chose not to elect for SBP. I chose a life insurance policy. It's cheaper. -Find a hobby. Although I don't have problems relaxing, I experience anxiety sometimes when I'm not doing anything. Although I could live comfortably off my retirement and VA compensation, I am looking for part-time work. I am also taking my time as job satisfaction is my priority. LinkedIn friends, I need your help! Earlier this year I took over the responsibility and leadership of the patrol teams who keep the Coastal Communities of San Diego safe and enjoyable. A major aspect of this assignment is the Summer Beach Team (SBT). SBT is made up of officers from all over the department who supplement existing beach teams to ensure proper staffing. My approach to help them be successful is aimed at achieving these primary goals: 1. Let them know their mission is important. “To maintain public safety by providing the highest quality police services to all of our communities.” 2. Give them an identity. “SBT!” 3. Help them stay focused on the mission by giving simple and clear expectations. “Don’t look away. Don’t major in the minors. Be professional, in your appearance, performance, and behavior at all times.” I am looking for your BEST short motivational, team work, leadership, etc. videos to show them every week. I’ll drop one in the comments to show you what I mean. If you think you have one - fire away! I am aiming for one a week, so I need about 20 videos. The shorter the better. From SMA Michael Weimer "Effective Immediately: To meet the CSAs intent of eliminating training which is redundant, antiquated, or doesn't support warfighting and lethality, the U.S. Army has determined it will eliminate approximately 346 hours of Distributed Learning Courses for Officers and NCOS. An analysis determined these courses were redundant and/or antiquated when assessed against current training requirements and needs. Enlisted courses being eliminated are Distributed Learning Courses (DLC) I-VI (formerly known as Structured Self Development (SSD) I-VI), they account for 253 hours or 31 days. Officer courses being eliminated are the Distance Learning Prerequisite for Commanders Career Course and the Distance Learning Prerequisite for Commanding General Staff Officers Course (P920), these account for 93 hours or 12 days. 164 hours of prerequisite Distance Learning Courses remain and are currently under analysis for potential elimination in the future. An ALARACT message will publish later today detailing full information on this change. This We'll Defend!"
