  • A Business Card Scanning Service called "Purple"

    -

Founded and launched Purple, a business card scanning service that helps user manage relationships, over an expedited two-week period.

The concept is simple -- every professional has that box of physical business sitting in their closet or desk drawer. We collect those cards, scan them and send back an organized, digital Excel spreadsheet that includes all of the contact information.

DON'T LET YOUR CONTACTS SIT IN A DRAWER. USE PURPLE.

DON'T LET YOUR CONTACTS SIT IN A DRAWER. USE PURPLE.

Our team established the business model, built the brand and website, wrote a press release, secured sponsorships for Detroit Startup Week, ran social media accounts and secured paying customers, all in less than two weeks.

The race went off without a hitch and was watched by over 30,000 attendees. Because of the success of this event, my firm was hired for follow-on work from the same client.

Health Crunch is a mobile application that uses predictive analytics to suggest healthy eating alternatives in real-time. Many people who suffer from ailments that could be controlled by a better diet (i.e. type 2 diabetes, hypertension, etc.) are simply unaware of their food options. We focus on informing users about better options.

Users have the ability to filter through recipes matching their health goals and scan foods to obtain a score based on their profile (created within the app). If users have scanned an unhealthy food that does not fit their personal profile, we suggest a similar, healthier item that does. Users earn rewards for purchasing healthy foods. The mission of Health Crunch is
to positively impact user’s health by providing healthy alternatives as well as a system of
    measurable goals and rewards.

On the back end, Health Crunch is powered by patented predictive analytics software
that learns more about the user with every interaction. Our software is currently in use
by health insurance companies to identify customers that will cost them the most. Once
identified, the insurance company recommends that they participate in healthy living
programs. The goal is for Health Crunch to become a certified healthy living program
    recommended by insurance providers.

My father is diabetic and is the main inspiration for creating this app. He is often unaware of the foods he’s eating that are loaded with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. I set out to build an easy to use app that would make it easier for him to identify foods that are safe for him to eat.

When Dave Anderson left Detroit at age 22, he never planned to come back: Robberies and exposure to violence had left him with what he and friends jokingly called “Deep Detroit Hatred Syndrome.” But he did eventually return, and the hatred turned into a “deep passion” and a desire to make an impact on his hometown.

Anderson was working full-time as an engineer in May 2013 when he and his friends started talking about partnering on a new business, a coworking space. Three months later, they opened Bamboo Detroit, which offers workshops, invests in other new businesses and hosts events. Bamboo has grown from 15 to 100 members and is still expanding.

“I don’t think we could have done it that quickly in any other city that I know of,” Anderson said.

Of Bamboo’s members, about 40 percent are women, 40 percent are minorities and 40 percent live in the city rather than the suburbs.

“Since we got started, we wanted to build a diverse community where everyone feels included and has access to the same opportunities,” Anderson said, adding that having diverse leadership was a primary way to achieve that.

In 2009, we launched our Past>Forward Campaign, with the goal of raising $20.1 million over five years for new and expanded exhibits, technology upgrades, educational offerings and enhancements to the Detroit Historical Museum, Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the collection. In 2014, the Detroit Historical Society concluded the Campaign, announcing that it raised more than $21.2 million, leaving a legacy of accomplishment, including the following: The dramatic re-invention of the Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, installing six brand new permanent exhibits and attractions including the Kid Rock Music Lab, Allesee Gallery of Culture (Detroit Historical Museum) and Built by the River (Dossin). The opening of the Legends Plaza outdoor attraction The enhancement of our eight permanent signature exhibits both Museums, including the Streets of Old Detroit, America’s Motor City (Detroit Historical Museum) and the William Clay Ford Pilot House (Dossin). The digitization of tens of thousands of artifacts from the Society’s collections making them accessible to students and researchers around the world. Significantly increased attendance at both Museums by over 50 percent. The adoption of a free admission policy for both Museums that has allowed them to reach a broader diversity of audiences than ever before. The upgrading and rebranding of the Society’s website at detroithistorical.org and the increasing of unique users from 250 percent over the duration of the Campaign. The creation of new educational programming and the publishing of two books. http://detroithistorical.org/
