Fast forward 30 years, I cannot believe we needed a law to get browsers and websites to agree on protecting your privacy by default... The internet should really be decentralized, and customer centrist by design. How did we ended up here?

What I hate the most about LinkedIn? The scammers posing as Recruiters. Perfect Example: This guy https://lnkd.in/gkcFVQ8Y contacts me today and claims to be working a role for amazon on Project Kuiper. Says that they have EXCLUSIVE rights to submit people on that team for any role, and that nobody else can submit for roles on this team. Claims that the role can only be filled through him. I find that odd, because when I was an L7 at Amazon in 2020, we worked with many different vendors. So I know that is a lie. So I reach out to the lead recruiter for that team using my personal network and she confirms that not only does he not have any form of exclusive right to submit, but also that his actions violate Amazons policies so it will be reported internally. Thank you, Amy. So then I get a call from "Prince" from a number listed as a Collabera caller ID branded number at 973-381-68{ last 2 digits removed so I'm not doxing}, after I thought I had already made it known I knew he did not really have the exclusivity he claimed, and on the call I point out all the issues with his claims and remind him I'm connected to the lead recruiter of that project so I can fact check him pretty easily. He then go on to lie to my face again, multiple times, claiming exclusivity, before finally admitting that he doesn't want to submit me to the role anyway because he refuses to submit candidates who can not be 100% onsite in another state (Texas). He also notes that he cant submit people with any kind of disability. I say that's discrimination and I note that my profile explicitly says that I'm not open to relocation and ask why he even contacted me? He then makes some racist comments in hindi that I wont repeat here (My typing of hindi is terrible, anyway) before he hangs up on me. Then, as I'm talking to the Amazon recruiter about this, I notice I can no longer access the scammers profile. They blocked me to try to protect themselves from being reported, not knowing that had already reported them as not a real person. The problem? The scammer is working for a company that might be legit but very poor quality. He refuses to follow the rules. The biggest issue with LinkedIn is that if somebody isn't attached to their profile because they haven't validated it as their real identity, they're going to treat it as a throwaway account like this guy is. In this case the guy made a big deal of the fact that a year ago he used a work email to validate his account, but that honestly means nothing in terms of security. It's not hard to validate an account using an e-mail that you no longer have access to; Is it still a valid verification if you no longer work there? Verifying an e-mail does not mean that you're a real person, it could be a service account or a fake email created for marketing outbound, and LinkedIn needs to remove this as a validation step or at least give it a different icon so people can treat it as it is a claim be verified.

When you are building out your engineering team there is no better way to hire software engineers than going with the hourly recruiting model. Job-seeking in Ukraine in 2024 - a hard topic that I would like to share with my thoughts and considerations. The job market in Ukraine in 2024 presents several significant challenges for job seekers. The ongoing conflict with Russia continues to cast a long shadow over Ukraine's job market. Security concerns and instability are major issues, particularly in regions close to the conflict zones. Infrastructure damage disrupts businesses and many people have been displaced leading to a strained labor market. With many people looking for work competition for available jobs is wild. For instance, in some positions in Djinni candidates feedback could vary up to 50-100 people per vacancy. Regardless, most people don't have relevant expertise but still expect to be hired due to cruel financial problems in the country (nobody wants to be left jobless for sure). Economic uncertainty and the war have eroded client confidence, reducing demand for products and services. Many companies are struggling to maintain their client base, and some have had to close or downsize. This reduction in business activity translates to fewer job openings and more precarious employment conditions. The disruption caused by the war and economic instability has also impacted the quality of goods and services. Businesses face challenges in maintaining consistent quality control due to supply chain issues and logistical disruptions. This affects their reputation and ability to retain and attract clients, further exacerbating the employment crisis. Frequent fluctuations in the economy add to the uncertainty for both job seekers and employers. Inflation, changes in regulations, and varying levels of foreign investment make long-term planning difficult for businesses, leading to cautious hiring practices and often hiring freezes. San Jose becomes the first city in California to choose to implement AB 1033, allowing homeowners to sell ADUs separately from their primary residences. Representative Phil Ting, a San Francisco Democrat who authored the bill, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan held a press conference on Friday, emphasizing that this is a new path to affordable housing. "We all know that homeownership has become out of reach for many residents in San Jose and across California," Mahan said. "We need to incorporate the innovation inherent in our region into housing policy to keep the American dream alive, and this new ordinance does just that. San Jose will continue to lead the way, but we can't solve this crisis alone, and I look forward to seeing other cities in California follow suit." “I’m grateful to the City of San Jose for seeing the impact my legislation could have on their community. ADU ownership can provide a pathway to buying a first home and can even help our seniors downsize,” said Ting. “With this more affordable housing option, increased homeownership can help create stronger communities.” San Jose has built nearly 1,400 new ADUs in the past five years, with thousands more under construction. That number represents about 23% of San Jose’s new housing stock during that same period. Now, homeowners in San Jose can sell their ADUs individually, similar to how you would sell a condo. AB 1033 went into effect this year, but cities must take additional steps and opt-in to the law. “Being able to sell my ADU was another reason to build my backyard addition, and it was one of the smartest things I’ve ever done,” said Joyce Higashi, an ADU owner in San Jose. “Not only has it increased my property value, it’s generated more rental income than I ever expected.” The Casita Coalition, a statewide organization dedicated to removing barriers to building more affordable, sustainable housing, was a strong advocate for the legislation. WFH policy for software engineers. It’s hard to find fully remote work opportunities nowadays, UNLESS, you want to work for big tech companies. HOWEVER, they have a high barrier to entry, and, most people understand, you (normally) must trade of work/life balance, to be successful in these companies. The norm is a hybrid setup. Most people want to be in an office environment again, sharing regular facetime with colleagues. The sweet spot is 1-2 days in-office p/week. Make sure you select at least one mandatory day, so everybody is in there together. 3+ days in-office p/week the gene pool of talent shrinks. If you’re office is Brisbane-based, those that live in regional areas (Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, etc.) likely won’t be interested. If you’re full-time in the office, you’re going to struggle. Your best bet will be hiring contractors, or, paying significantly above market. #wfh #softwareengineers

Zillow, Redfin, probably other similar sites, have siloed sections for houses for sale, one for traditional realtor listing agents via MLS, which is of course the default, and then buried deep in the filters you can chose to see for sale by owner instead, but definitely not at the same time. I'm a fairly technical guy, and as far as I can imagine this would not be down to a technical limitation of any kind. So, can anyone ELI5 how this isn't cartel behavior? When I first typed that, I wasn't sure I was using quite the right word, so I looked it up, and yeah, I am no expert on this but it sure seems like the US has a housing cartel - Pretty sure that is an accurate use of the word. cartel /kär-tĕl′/ noun 1. A combination of independent business organizations formed to regulate production, pricing, and marketing of goods by the members.
