Development environments for spoken dialogue systems are popular today because they enable rapid creation of the dialogue systems in times when usage of the voice AI Assistants is constantly growing. We describe a graphical Discourse-Driven Integrated Dialogue Development Environment (DD-IDDE) for spoken open-domain dialogue systems. The DD-IDDE allows dialogue architects to interactively define dialogue flows of their skills/chatbots with the aid of the discourse-driven recommendation system, enhance these flows in the Python-based DSL, deploy, and then further improve based on the skills/chatbots usage statistics. We show how these skills/chatbots can be specified through a graphical user interface within the VS Code Extension, and then run on top of the Dialog Flow Framework (DFF). An earlier version of this framework has been adopted in one of the Alexa Prize 4 socialbots while the updated version was specifically designed to power the described DD-IDDE solution.

In this report, we present the DREAM 2 Socialbot design and share scientific and technology contributions made towards developing a fluent and meaningful socialbot for Alexa Prize 4. Building on top of the last year’s solution we added a rich plethora of the script-driven skills created with the help of the novel Dialogue Flow Framework. To lay down the foundation for the discourse-driven dialogue strategy management we introduced tag-based Response Selector and Speech Functions Classifier. We also began working on User and Bot Persona Knowledge Graphs as well as incorporated our work on World Knowledge Graph alongside with Entity Linking. The final version of DREAM 2 Socialbot is still a hybrid system that combines rule-based, deep learning, and knowledge based driven components, but it moves closer to a goal-aware system that can recognize users’ and own goals and drive the dialogue strategically.

Building a dialogue system able to talk fluently and meaningfully in an open domain
conversation is one of the foundational challenges in the field of AI. Recent progress
in NLP driven by the application of the deep neural networks and large language
models opened new possibilities to solve many hard problems of the conversational
AI. Alexa Prize Socialbot Grand Challenge gives a unique opportunity to test
cutting edge research ideas in the real-world setting. In this report, we outline the
DREAM socialbot solution and present evaluation results. DREAM socialbot is
implemented as a multi-skill conversational agent with the modular micro-service
architecture. DREAM agent orchestrates a dozen text preprocessing annotators
and more than 25 conversational skills to generate responses in the context of
the open domain conversation. Feedback from Alexa users during the evaluation
period allowed us to gradually develop our solution by increasing the number
of conversational skills and improving the transition between them. As a result,
dialogues became 50% longer, and average rating grew from ∼ 3 during the initial
stage in December’19 to ∼ 3.4 during the last two weeks of April’20. The final
version of DREAM socialbot is a hybrid system that combines rule-based, deep
learning, and knowledge base driven components.
