Now this is some document! The California School Boards Association published this document "Drowning in Documentation" listing all the reporting requirements school systems must complete. 📜 📰 🗞 📎 🖇 "Although individual reports may not present an undue burden, the cumulative impact draws resources away from critical tasks and responsibilities of LEA staff, especially in California’s smaller districts and county offices of education." I'm familiar with many of the reports from my time as a principal, central office director and business chief. Don't overlook one report and think it's no biggie. The first one listed, the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) can be hundreds of pages long and review hundreds of metrics, all of which need to be evaluated and reported on. Not to mention all the data gathering, meetings, community meetings, staff meetings, input sessions, presentations and more, that need to happen. It can be a full time position in school systems, if they have the funding. Otherwise, it's one of many duties to a central office administrator. Oh also, don't forget that in a school system with thousands of students, staff, parents, community - well, things happen, to say the least. The same people doing these reports have to take care of those things too. I suspect that nationally, there are similar sentiments from educational leaders. There's definitely a need for oversight, and accountability measures, reporting and more, but looking at this document (this is the first time I've seen in one document all the reports listed), you have to ask yourself how beneficial this is to students, educators and communities? That's why recently I've been thinking and writing that we need to release educators from so many mandates, and give them more agency. And education adjacent org/companies need to focus on making K-12 work easier. (shameless plug that's why I love Allovue - K-12 finance software - I lived the challenge of trying to manage complicated K-12 finance; it was tough, and long hours) Thanks to California School Boards Association for publishing. Is AI in Education Cheating? I had the pleasure of joining the 3Ps in a Pod podcast from the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy at Northern Arizona University and the Arizona K12 Center. I sat down with hosts Dr. Chad Gestson and LeeAnn Lindsey, Ed.D. to dive into a hot topic: "Is AI cheating?" Instead of just focusing on plagiarism, we discussed how AI can actually transform education. This conversation gave us a chance to rethink the true purpose of education and how we evaluate learning. 14 Educators representing 5 different local school districts met today for our second Knowledge Gap study and discussion! We had a very productive exchange of ideas. My favorite part was that some of the teachers from my home district shared that this book and discussion makes them feel more confident as we work to implement #Amplify CKLA in the Fall. The shift to a knowledge-building curriculum brings a shift in approach for us, but it is one that our teachers are looking forward to with excitement now 🎉📚🧡 My biggest takeaway? Instructional change has to begin with teacher knowledge. If you want buy-in, help teachers to find their “why”! When they are sold on the why, the “how” and “what” become solutions to the problem that THEY want to solve, rather than something they are being forced to do. We can’t wait to offer these enhanced learning experiences for our students this year 🎉📚🧡

Each year, the CCCAOE board gathers for its Board Retreat to strategize and plan for the next year. This year, we added a campus tour to our 3 days of work. This tour was at San Diego City College. We are energized by the fantastic hosts and guides, including Sasha Knox, Ed.D, Associate Dean of Strong Workforce and Career Education, who gave the board a comprehensive tour of many CTE programs and facilities. It was a great reminder of why we do this work. Orange County Region, we are coming to you in January 2025.   WHY THIS WORK MATTERS   As each college strives to meet workforce needs in the ever-changing landscape of education, CCCAOE brings stakeholders together to share best practices and advocate for excellence in career education throughout the state. Professional development is designed to help prepare members for future industry and education trends, and to improve student success and employment. Last month, some of our team members attended the annual ISTE Live conference at the Denver Convention Center (how cool is that big blue bear!?). With 17,000+ in attendance and 2,000+ presenters, there were so many opportunities for K12 teachers to level up their ed tech knowledge. It’s no surprise there were countless sessions and learning opportunities revolving around AI. Our Sr. Manager of Digital Marketing, Francesca Quinion, attended one of these sessions titled “ChatGPT Wrote this Talk” with presenter Douglas Kaing. Here are some high-level takeaways she brought back to the team that I found to be the most interesting: 🤖Teachers working together with AI are more efficient than AI working alone or a teacher working alone. 🤖 Generative AI is unreliable to use as a search engine alone. Students are using ChatGPT the same way they use Google when they need be teaching it through prompting. 🤖 AI will always take the shortest path with the least amount of effort to get to the answer. AI doesn’t understand the meaning of words or phrases but understands where they fit together. So sometimes these seemingly valid connections are the wrong ones. 🤖 ChatGPT is great with content but not skills. For example, if ChatGPT were a recipe, it has all the ingredients (content) but not the instructions (skills). 🤖 In the age of ChatGPT, care and empathy become essential intelligences that humans need to be equipped with to successfully use genAI in their work. Not a day goes by that I don’t learn something new about AI.
