Analytic Solutions of Hypersonic Newtonian Flows Over Ellipses
AIAA SciTech 2022 Forum
Closed form, analytic solutions for the aerodynamic performance of complex shapes can provide valuable guidance during conceptual design in the hypersonic regime. Using Newtonian impact theory, we present formulae for the sectional lift and drag coefficients of an infinite wing with elliptical cross section within a hypersonic flow. We demonstrate that these formulae recover the limiting cases of a flat plate and infinite cylinder. Furthermore, we provide verification of the analytic formulae…
Furthermore, we provide verification of the analytic formulae by comparison to numerical integration via both trapezoidal integration and adaptive quadrature. We also provide comparisons of our predictions with the Cartesian Euler solver, Cart3D, demonstrating root mean square errors of 0.051 for sectional lift coefficient and 0.103 for sectional drag coefficient, over the complete range of aspect ratios and angles of attack. This effort is a first step towards the development of analytical formulae for more complex shapes that can be used to characterize the behavior of more realistic hypersonic vehicles.
