Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation. This is a good read no matter what profession you are in, but especially if you are relatively new in your career. I'm not sure how to teach this, but there has to be an escalation procedure if you see something that concerns you. Start small (friendly chat with the crew???), then work your way up if you're still concerned. Going from zero to full throttle in 3 seconds definitely is not the right approach. Looking back, it was/is nice that in order to get your Professional Engineers License in Ontario, they actually go over cases similar to this (reporting process for engineering safety concerns). Maybe other professions can benefit from something similar. This seems "common sense" to us older folks, but maybe it's not so common to those still starting out. https://lnkd.in/ev5tb96m

Why is the U-2 still in service while the SR-71 is not? One of the main reasons for the retirement of the SR-71 was its high cost and complexity. The SR-71 was very expensive to operate and maintain, requiring a large amount of support personnel, equipment, and fuel. It could not take off with a full load of fuel, so it had to be refueled in the air several times during a mission. It had to use a special type of fuel and a toxic chemical to ignite its engines. Also, the SR-71 leaked fuel on the ground, as its tanks only sealed up when the aircraft reached high speeds and temperatures. Another reason for the retirement of the SR-71 was the advancement of other technologies that made it less relevant and useful. The SR-71 was designed to fly fast and high to avoid enemy detection and interception. However, with the improvement of radar, missile, and satellite systems, it became more vulnerable and less effective. It also had limited capabilities in terms of data collection and transmission, as it relied on film cameras and radio signals. On the other hand, the U-2 has remained in service because it has some advantages over the SR-71. The U-2 is cheaper and simpler to operate and maintain, requiring less support personnel, equipment, and fuel. It can take off and land with a full load of fuel, reducing the need for aerial refueling. Also, U-2 uses conventional fuel and engines, making it easier to handle and store. The U-2 adapted to new technologies that made it more relevant and useful. It has been upgraded and modified over the years to incorporate new sensors, cameras, radars, antennas, and computers. The U-2 can collect and transmit various types of data in real-time, such as imagery, signals, electronic, and geospatial intelligence. Also, it can perform multiple types of missions at once, such as surveillance, reconnaissance, communication relay, research, and testing. So depending on these factors and others, the U-2 has remained in service while the SR-71 has been retired. The U-2 has proven to be more cost-effective, reliable, versatile, and adaptable than the SR-71. However, this does not mean that the SR-71 was not a remarkable aircraft in its own right. The SR-71 was a groundbreaking achievement in aviation history that pushed the limits of speed, altitude, and stealth.

Recruiters, do you specialize? I hope the answer is yes. I specialize in Aerospace/Defense Industry when those companies manufacture or build something. That is my niche, my sweet spot, my specialty. Do I deviate, yes but that is highly dependent on the situation. I spoke to a potential client today and this director said, they have such difficulty using agency recruiters because they do not have experience recruiting for their aerospace specialty. If I did not specialize, then I would not be able to differentiate myself from other agencies. You see, I've started and either sold or merged two aerospace/defense companies and that was before I started a recruiting agency, The Patriot Group, Inc. (TPGI) back in 20212. Day-in, day-out, they work tirelessly to assure the airworthiness and safe operation of today’s fleets. Their skills and expertise are indispensable. Here’s a story about one of them, Senior Director of Engine Asset Management, Desean Palmer, who began his career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician. Desean has been a vital part of the VAS Aero Services maintenance operation for 18 years. He got his start in aviation maintenance at Broward College where he received his Airframe and Powerplant Licenses & Certification, and a degree in Aviation Management. 🛬 What has helped Desean advance his career? Desean credits his rise in the aviation tech ranks to the time management skills, problem solving abilities and overall detailed knowledge like the importance of proper documentation and clear communication that he has learned over the years.
