Marathon Asset Management is pleased to announce the reset of Marathon CLO 2020-15. The reset reinstated the CLO's reinvestment period for another five years and upsized into a $462 Million structure. The fact that a CLO manager has the ability to lower its liability cost via refinancing, while also extending maturities through a reset is one more factor while CLO Equity is viewed as a compelling investment opportunity. Resets and refinancings have the potential to add additional cash-flow that accrues to the CLO Equity.

As a firm that advocates for reliable, spendable, absolute return, public equity investing - which is untethered from the future performance of a market index - we were intrigued by several of Jeff Assaf’s comments in the recent podcast episode Ted Seides of Capital Allocators that “threw shade” on the expected foreseeable returns of the stock market. We share Mr. Assaf’s muted outlook for foreseeable equity market results. This one comment in particular caught our eye: ♦ “[If] you conclude the stock market is going to give you 5 or 6 or 7% [over the next 5 or 10 years], and you’re a foundation that gives away 5% a year. Plus you’ve got some operating expenses to run your foundation. You probably have to do something about it. What are you going to do?” Bingo! What are you going to do? More alternatives can be part of the solution, as Mr. Assaf goes on to suggest in the interview. But asset owners and allocators shouldn't accept that the status quo public equity allocation to become a performance albatross via inattention. If the stock market as defined by a market index is going to give you mid-single digits [over the next decade] and you represent an institution with a 5% payout rate (plus operating expenses and inflation), you likely have a funding problem looming on the horizon. Traditional actively and passively managed equity management - implicitly or explicitly - tether’s one’s future return to the future performance of the market index. But if "actively" hugging what is expected to be the meager future returns of a market index will be insufficient fund your organization’s commitments, its time for a fresh approach and new perspective to public market equity investing. Adding an absolute return, public equity posture to one's portfolio complements any changes or expansion of one’s private asset allocation, but without ratcheting-up illiquidity, non-transparency or leverage.
