Revenue versus Contribution Margin: Which Helps Set Cash Rental Rates? The average annual change in budgeted corn prices since 2020 has been $0.83 per bushel. The changes were positive between 2020 and 2022 but downward in 2023 and 2024. Such swings make it difficult for producers to adjust cash rental rates appropriately, as survey benchmarks are quickly irrelevant. USDA proposes fix to Packers and Stockyards Act The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced newly proposed rule to support the Biden-Harris Administration’s plan for the meat and poultry supply chain. USDA’s Fair and Competitive Livestock and Poultry Markets proposed rule addresses challenges around interpretations of unfairness and competitive injury for the livestock, meat, and poultry sectors. The measure is designed to support farmers and lower food costs for consumers. Secretary Vilsack made the announcement during an event at the Center for American Progress showcasing the Administration’s agenda to create more affordable and competitive agricultural markets. The event highlighted USDA’s wide-ranging progress to enhance the Department’s ability to enforce the Packers and Stockyards Act, including previous rulemaking and an enforcement partnership with the Department of Justice. Rising costs and complexities, many beyond our control, add to the difficulties. With a multigenerational perspective, growers understand that these challenges must not paralyze us. - In 2024, Yakima Chief plans to bring in the smallest crop since 2017. This refocused volume is pointed towards our historically highest quality fields. We will continue to align our supply by variety with customer demand. - The Pacific Northwest has seen significant reductions in acreage in all three states, most significantly in the flavor-forward aroma category. The traditional aroma category has also experienced reductions, albeit to a lesser extent. - Alpha acreage has been the least affected, in the case of certain varieties, even slightly increased. - Our goal is to increase field efficiency year over year by prioritizing agronomic sustainability through improving disease and pest resistance. Now, more than ever, brewers should prioritize where they source their hops. In the last six months, we have seen families lose their farms. We have seen other farms acquire farms, and we will see more hop farms cease to exist before the concerted efforts of growers and brewers can stabilize our symbiotic industries. Purchasing hops directly from growers ensures the best returns. While we recognize the occasional necessity for painful adjustments, we urge everyone involved, from farm to taproom, to stick together, enhance resilience, refine our practices, and emerge stronger for the future. IS THE TREND RATE OF GROWTH IN THE U.S. AVERAGE CORN YIELD SLOWING? — by Scott H. Irwin Trend yield projections are foundational to supply and demand analysis for corn before the growing season begins. The most appropriate model to use in projecting trend yield has been the subject of considerable debate for many years. We use a crop weather model to disentangle potential trend changes from weather impacts and find no evidence of a statistically significant change in trend for the U.S. average corn yield starting in 2013. The relatively narrow range of U.S. average corn yields since 2013 is likely a reflection of poorer than average growing season weather instead of a slowdown in the technology of corn production. At the present time, the evidence suggests that the crop weather model used provides a reasonable estimate of the trend for the U.S. average corn yield. The trend yield estimate for 2024 using the model is 182.1 bushels per acre. This estimate will soon need to be modified by the actual observation for late planting, which will be available after May 20. It will be interesting to compare the crop weather model trend estimate to the first corn yield projection for 2024 in the upcoming May WASDE report to be released this Friday.
