The two new advanced AP1000® PWR reactors at Plant Vogtle were named “Power Plant of the Year” by POWER magazine, well-deserved recognition for Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power Company and the tremendous effort by thousands of professionals who contributed to the project. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 both came online in the last 12 months. The magazine highlighted the reactors’ awesome performance so far. “Vogtle Unit 3’s initial performance has exceeded our expectations,” John Williams, Southern Nuclear senior vice president for Vogtle 3 and 4, told POWER. “Since it began commercial operation in July 2023, Unit 3 has operated at greater than 98% capacity factor, running at 100% since commercial operation was declared with the exception of a planned five-day maintenance outage.” That exceeds the #NuclearEnergy industry average of 93% capacity! Combined, the two AP1000 reactors are churning out enough clean energy to power 1 million homes. As a first-of-its-kind, fly-by-wire rigid airship, electronics are a significant piece of what separates Pathfinder 1 from airships of the past. To ensure reliability, Director of Electrical Engineering Hossein was testing functionality and repeatability on an early iteration of our power distribution unit (PDU). As the electrification of systems and devices increases, so does our dependency on reliable, clean power. #Georgia Power’s #Vogtle nuclear power plant’s expansion (units 3 & 4) is now complete with unit 4 coming online 4/29/2024. This is a great achievement for Georgia Power and Westinghouse as approximately 2 million homes around the Augusta, GA area can be powered through low-cost, emission-free generation. Although the expansion should be celebrated, delays (7 years) and cost over-runs ($17B) can’t be ignored. Because of the magnitude of this project and short fallings with project execution, confidence in US nuclear has been damaged and unrealized risks for future projects will have to be assessed before these projects are green-lit. #NuclearPower #VogtlePowerPlant #Georgia #EnergyConsultant #InfinityPowerPartners

What good news! We are delighted to see the US National Labs and the Department of Energy using our cutting-edge #immersioncooling technology. 🚀 Early positive results led Dave Martinez, engineering program project lead for Sandia’s Infrastructure Computing Services, to envision reducing the two big problem areas of power and water use, which are expected to hinder the development of faster and more powerful machines. #FlashBackFriday: Ten years ago, we completed this 500/230/138/12kV substation and 500kV transmission line loop-in to help our customer interconnect #renewable energy and improve power reliability. This power utility came to us facing a tight energization deadline, so we rolled our sleeves up and made it happen. We performed several tasks at once, including grading, foundation installation, steel erection, and wiring/testing to achieve the highly-accelerated construction schedule and get this project online on time. „…Data center developers in Northern Virginia are asking utility Dominion Energy Inc. for as much power as several nuclear reactors can generate, in the latest sign of how artificial intelligence is helping drive up electricity demand. Dominion regularly fields requests from developers whose planned data center campuses need as much as “several gigawatts” of electricity, Chief Executive Officer Bob Blue said Thursday during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. A gigawatt is roughly the output of a nuclear reactor and can power 750,000 homes. Electric utilities are facing the biggest demand jump in a generation. Along with data centers to run AI computing, America’s grid is being strained by new factories and the electrification of everything from cars to home heating. The surge in demand is complicating utility efforts to turn off carbon-emitting power plants and meet their climate goals. Over the past five years, Dominion has connected 94 data centers that, together, consume about 4 gigawatts of electricity, Blue said. That means that just two or three of the data center campuses now being planned could require as much electricity as all the centers Dominion hooked up since about 2019.“
