Oregon's Privacy Laws just kicked in! You as the citizen consumer have new ways to control what companies know about you and do with your information: Right to Know — Consumers can get a list of the specific entities that received their personal data. Right to Correction—Consumers can edit any inaccuracies in the data about them. Right to Deletion— Consumers can delete the data a business has about them. Right to Opt Out—Consumers can say no to a business selling, profiling or otherwise using their data for targeted advertising. Right to Data Portability—Consumers can get a copy of the personal and sensitive data a business has about them. Sensitive Data Protections — The OCPA contains heightened protections (a requirement that data may not be processed without a consumer’s affirmative “opt in” consent) for “sensitive data”, which includes personal data revealing racial or ethnic background, national origin, religious beliefs, mental or physical condition or diagnosis, sexual orientation, status as transgender or nonbinary, crime victim status, or citizenship or immigration status; genetic or biometric data; and precise geolocation data. Special Protections for Youth — Children and youth are given heightened protections under the OCPA. Controllers (handlers of consumer data) must follow the requirements of the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) when processing data of children under 13 years old. Further, “opt in” consent is required for targeted advertising, profiling, or sale of the personal data of a youth 13 to 15 years old. 🛑 "Both consumers and companies need to remain hyper-vigilant to synthetic fraud and look to multi-layered anti-fraud solutions, not only deepfake detection." 🛑 Former U.S. president Donald Trump posing with Black voters, President Joe Biden discouraging people from voting via telephone or the Pope in a puffy white jacket: Deepfakes of videos, photos and audio recordings have become widespread on various internet platforms, aided by the technological advances of large language models like Midjourney, Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT. With the right prompt fine-tuning, everyone can create seemingly real images or make the voices of prominent political or economic figures and entertainers say anything they want. While creating a deepfake is not a criminal offence on its own, many governments are nevertheless moving towards stronger regulation when using artificial intelligence to prevent harm to the parties involved. For example, the number of fraud attempts in the Philippines rose by 4,500 percent year over year, followed by nations like Vietnam, the United States and Belgium.

Finding primary data on #sextortion is extremely difficult, with reliable statistics typically available only through law enforcement and specialized hotlines. This report provides excellent data on the immense scale of this threat, detailing the platforms and apps exploited, victim profiles, motivations, and more. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children 's annual numbers offer a variety of valuable data points as we seek to better map the scale and nature of technology facilitated child sexual exploration, ranging from the volume of reports coming to their Cyberatipline, to the types of harms contained in those reports, to the people behind the abuse seen in the images being trafficked. I have a very laissez faire view of digital footprints — the kind that I’m sure will scare Glenn Gore and the most staunch arbiters of privacy. As a digital native, I see how my data identity has been used to the best of effects. My TikTok algorithm is a beautiful work of (relatable) art: my Instagram, an unending funnel of things I didn’t know I needed to buy. I’m quite certain I’ll go mad if one day my digital identity gets reset. Sometimes I wonder how it got to this. My logic is that my data is always being mined and used six ways come Sunday. It’s inevitable the more digitally connected we are. Today, with the rising trend of online scams, there’s an even higher need to protect and identify consumers. And how do you identify consumers? Through the exchange of data. It’s all very poetic really — the thing that will protect us is also the very thing that we need to surrender. It’s why I still retain mixed feelings about what Gore has to say about data: “At Affinidi, securing digital identities is a priority as we navigate an increasingly digitised society, ensuring individuals can confidently claim their digital existence.” But can we though? Do we need to? I’m not sure. For me, the digital data surrender is an inevitability, so the Internet might as well deliver me information that I need and may enjoy — like a tinted serum from Rationale or a pair of wide-leg pants from Marakech. Still, I admire Gore’s sense of hope with his North Star at the Temasek-funded firm — “Where your personal data is as intrinsic to you as your physical self and treated with the utmost respect and privacy.” Because in a world where data is as easy to mine, dole, and exchange as promises and opinions, hope is perhaps the very thing that we need. Enforcement is an important concept in government. Fraud, waste and abuse of government programs doesn’t happen by chance, it’s usually well architected. In Minnesota over the last decade there have been enough cases that a fraud tracker is now being kept by a private organization to show total monetary losses. This article is about a case where additional fraud was perpetrated through bribery of a juror. Posting because it’s a example of why early warning systems that provide threat detection, vulnerabilities identification, pattern recognition are necessary in grant management to support and strengthen enforcement. The original case included $250 million in losses for meals never served to millions of children in a database of fake data on students that didn’t exist. What if the state could have matched the student population submitted to school enrollment files? Maybe the outcome would be different.

This month, Texas officials have both weakened federal enforcement and strengthened state enforcement of #dataprotection laws While a federal judge in Texas ruled last week HHS’ Office for Civil Rights guidance on website tracking technologies was unlawful, Attorney Gen­er­al Ken Pax­ton this month has launched a data pri­va­cy and secu­ri­ty ini­tia­tive. The data privacy team will focus on the enforcement of Texas laws, including ★Data Privacy and Security Act ★Identify Theft Enforcement and Protection Act ★Data Broker Law ★Biometric Identifier Act ★Deceptive Trade Practices Act In addition, the AG’s office will pursue companies that fail to comply with federal laws including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Prior to the Texas comprehensive privacy act that was passed last year, Paxton filed several lawsuits against Meta and Google for storing biometric and facial geometry data without user consent. 💥Coming up...In five days the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act will take effect.
