Yet, despite the challenge of association, there is a clear need for democratic societies to cultivate citizens who are civically minded and educated to seek solutions that empower human flourishing and the common good. Social entrepreneurship in faith-based nonprofits is examined to identify the underlying factors that lead to successful integration of the hybrid business model for sustainable social impact. Using a realist synthesis approach, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify the contexts and mechanisms that correlated to a positive integration and the outcome of a sustainable organizational structure. In the context of diverse hybrid organizational models the overarching key mechanism is the level of embeddedness. Specifically, the embeddedness and integration of for-profit and nonprofit logic and decision models as well as the merging of three distinct cultures - charity, entrepreneurship, and faith - were identified as key underlying mechanisms. The associated outcomes and data are presented and discussed in the findings section. This review concludes by outlining the applicability of the findings to faith-based nonprofit managers, organizations, and entrepreneurs.
