A forum in which young composers and librettists collaborate to develop their skills by creating short original operatic pieces (based on contemporary American stories) under the mentorship of established professionals. In the first component 3 pairs of composers and librettists (ages 22-30) each create a 20 minute piece for 3-5 voices and 4-10 orchestra members, leading to a concert-style semi-staged performance. In the second component one composer/librettist pair (under age 40) is chosen to create a 1 hour piece, using 3-5 voices and 4-12 orchestra members, leading to a fully stage production. Three mentors (a composer, a librettist and a conductor) work with the pairs over the course of the year, providing guidance and feedback. The teams also work with the performers in workshop settings, gaining feedback and practical experience in how to write for voices, instruments and for the stage.
