If you passed by Lehigh University’s Iacocca Hall last week, you might have seen something you don’t see every day: people changing the tires of a NASCAR-style car in the middle of the parking lot. The visiting Mandela Washington Fellows and other members of the Lehigh community participated in the Pit Crew Challenge this, during which they were challenged to quickly use mechanical equipment to change four tires on an actual retired NASCAR vehicle. The participants are timed, received coaching, and must improve and become faster with each attempt. The experience teaches several key themes that drive high-performing cultures, Parker said, like collaboration, trust vs. risk, managing complexity, building a coaching culture, breaking down silos, and working together toward a common goal. “We try to take the Fellows out of their comfort zones and put them into situations they likely would not be in if they hadn't come here,” said Scott Koerwer, Executive Director of the Iacocca Institute. “The Pit Crew Challenge is one such scenario that helps developing global leaders better understand complexity and social systems with competing values and processes, as well as the inevitability of episodic ambiguity and uncertainty.” The Iacocca Institute is hosting 25 of Africa’s bright, emerging business leaders for six weeks in its capacity as an Institute Partner for the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The Pit Crew Challenge was just one of several activities planned for the Mandela Fellows during their time at Lehigh. 🌟 Celebrating a Major Milestone in Clean Energy Collaboration! 🌟 Representatives from ten states—Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont—have come together to coordinate transmission grid expansion efforts with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). On July 9, 2024, these states signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize their collaboration, accelerating the siting and permitting of regional and interregional transmission facilities, including both onshore and offshore options. This partnership is essential for the Eastern Seaboard to meet clean energy goals cost-effectively. The MOU highlights: ✅ Shared transmission priorities for substantial benefits. ✅ Federal support for offshore wind and clean energy objectives. ✅ Common technical standards to reduce costs and ensure compatibility. Chelsea VanHorn Stinnett, PhD is the Technical Assistance Coordinator for Think College and also a graduate affiliate faculty member at Wright State University. Think College is part of the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston. Think College is a network of nearly 400 Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) programs throughout the United States. These IPSE programs provide career and life skills to students with intellectual disabilities who otherwise likely would not be able to attend college. Unlike autism and neurodiversity that supporting degree-seeking students such as those in the College Autism Network (CAN), these Think College IPSE programs are generally not for degree-seeking students. Most programs offer some sort of credentialing in a relevant career area of the student's choice. Many offer students an opportunity to take inclusive classes with neurotypical, degree-seeking students with accommodations and even modifications since these classes are generally not for credit toward a degree. Many also offer their own job- and life-skill classes. About half of the programs in the Think College network offer residential options on campus for students as well. Think College reports upon self-reported data from federally funded, model demonstration sites, and the results overall are encouraging: 84% program completion rates 96% earned a certificate 72% had a paid job (at exit or within 90 days), were participating in unpaid career development activities, had transferred to another postsecondary education program, or were doing a combination of these activities at exit. The team, led by Prof. @Y.C. Ethan Yang with @Chung-Yi Lin ’23 PhD and Prof. @Farrah Moazeni, focused specifically on the effects of climate-driven flooding and #cyberattacks. Therefore, they might even teach your child or grandchild someday!   Lehigh Valley Summerbridge students are from the Bethlehem, Easton, and Allentown school districts, as well as Holy Infancy School. They are all hard-working students who were recommended by their district teachers and guidance counselors. They all have dreams of going to college, but aren't sure how they will get there. With the New York State budget passed, today the SUNY Board of Trustees announced the additional allocation of $114M from the enacted state budget and how that money will be used to best support #SUNY State-Operated Campuses. The increase in funding will provide well-deserved salary increases that reflect collective bargaining agreements with $102M out of the $114M being used to support faculty and staff at our state-operated campuses; $4.5M for additional internship experiences; $4M to support research; and a reduction of mandatory fees for graduate student workers. Last year’s $163M increase in operating aid made it possible for SUNY to increase access to mental health services, support students with disabilities, increase student-paid internship experiences, expand research endeavors, and address campus food insecurities. These ongoing investments will allow SUNY to continue to offer high-quality education and support to our students.   SUNY is immensely grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul and the State Legislature for their continued commitment to higher education.
