Like many other small business owners, I began searching for a new sticker/label provider yesterday after receiving a tone-deaf email from Sticker Mule's co-founder that was part unhinged political tirade and part sales pitch for discounted t-shirts. Positioning isn't new. It isn't trendy. It's what makes anything new and trendy successful. My 3 biggest takeaways from 'Obviously Awesome' by April Dunford: 1. It's easy to fall into Positioning Traps: stuck on the idea your product was intended to do OR failing to adjust positioning as the market shifts. 2. Positioning is the context of your product. If you fail to provide that context, your market will provide one for you (and you probably won't like it) 3. Knowing your customer alternatives to your product is more important than competitive research. What would they do if your product suddenly didn't exist? Hire an intern? Nothing? Use pen and paper? It's rarely the software you may think it is.

We need to break up....? Michelle Tackabery shares some considerations before leaving your martech vendor on the MarTech Over time your business will change, this should be something that everyone by now is comfortable with. We need to accept that certain technologies will only take us so far, that we are required to be able to identify when it is time to change. Some things to think about: 1. Have you outgrown your current solution? 2. Has your vendor changed their product or marketing strategy? 3. Have you done your research? Shhh....let it go. Let it go. 😅 What worked then may not work now. Users change. *People* change. Being a solid PMM includes knowing when and where to pivot. Whether it's being a little more flexible with how you define your primary target audience (S/O to Stanley 1913), or maybe shifting your product's positioning--it's worth a try. Keeping your KPIs front and center, look at which parts of your marketing strategy would benefit the most from a makeover. The results may surprise (and humble) you.

In the latest MarTech.org podcast, which of course you knew existed, Mike Pastore sat down virtually with Canberk Beker for a "final verdict" on lead gen vs demand gen. Toward the end of the interview, Mike and Canberk discussed whether or not organizations can do both. Canberk advocates picking a lane and spoke to my own sense of why aligning incentives is one of the precursors to high levels of performance when he said "How really it is possible to do both if you are measured by only pipeline or if you are only measured by number of MQLs..."
