Follow up tips: Following up with a journalist can often be a good thing. Stuff gets lost in the maw of an inbox. The below only apply if you don't have something super time-sensitive. DO: Include the initial email inline with your reminder so we don't have to hunt. Re-attach any documents or include links. Be understanding. Follow up if you get an out of office responder. DON'T: Follow up the same day. Follow up to a Friday evening email on Monday morning. Give us a second. Be accusatory or annoyed.

Stop winging your media interviews. I know you're a seasoned executive. I know you've done countless press briefings. Writers, bloggers and LinkedIn posters LOVE lists, but sometimes they use them as a crutch. Here’s the eighth of nine suggestions on how to write better lists: Always number each item. I enjoyed The Oatmeal’s post on 5 Reasons Why Pigs Are More Awesome Than You. (See link in the comments section) It made me laugh, which is perhaps why I forgave them for failing to include numbers on their list. But readers are less forgiving if there’s no humor involved. If you’re giving a list ALWAYS use numerals. They orient the reader and they help make reading easier. ✍️ What guidelines do you keep in mind when writing lists? ♻️ Please share if you think this post might help others.

Dear aspiring PR/comms pros: If you want to be effective in this role, you have to consume a lot of news. Every day. PR is not glittery events and "that's the perfect idea--we love it!" brainstorms a la "Emily in Paris." It's more like nonstop surveillance and connecting of dots: If you want to stand out in this role, you need to: 🎯 Know the top thought leaders on the topics critical to your business 🎯 Be familiar with the beats + recent coverage from the journalists you pitch 🎯 Be be deliberate about getting out of your bubble--track media across geographic, political, cultural, and industry groups 🎯 Understand (and be able to explain) what is and isn't newsworthy 🎯 Share insights and recommend meaningful action when appropriate Staying on top of current events is critical for: ⚡Differentiating yourself as someone who can bring current examples to the group and tell people things they didn’t already know. ⚡ Tracking competitors ⚡ Spotting emerging trends that you can create relevant pitches around ⚡ Identifying opportunities ⚡ Staying current on things impacting your customers lives and consumption behavior ⚡ Being aware of sensitive news cycles so you can know when you should hold off on soft news pitches ⚡ Guarding against crises ⚡ Being attune to looming threats to your company/industry ⚡ Catching news that you need to react to internally or externally 🚨 If you aren't genuinely interested in the news, this job is not for you.

I love PR and Comms folks - they know the grind, they know the hustle. They love, I repeat, love getting their hands dirty. They're a different breed altogether. Legit spin gold out of thin air. PR is more than random press releases vomited out to the press - that model doesn't work anymore. It's redundant. Even sweet-talking journalists doesn't cut ice anymore, many of us have been on both sides of the fence. Invest in PR. And give good PR ideas at least 3-6 months to germinate, take shape and blossom. PR folks are crouching tigers, they know the beat and pounce in stealth mode. Crisis management, brand building, you name it - they're your allies. Shameless plug? It’s a common misconception that you must be extroverted to succeed in PR. This article from Stylist Magazine shares how to succeed at work if you are an introvert. Today's One Weird Trick for making a journalist's life easier: Horizontal photos. Most news sites require a horizontal image to use as a promo that appears on homepages and on social sites like LinkedIn. Having 2:1 ratio images that look good in these promo slots saves the journalist from having to make crops or adjustments to make it fit.
