Coherent breathing is a breathing practice that balances the stress-response system. When we find the ideal breath for ourselves, this is called a resonant rate—somewhere between 3 1/2 and 6 breaths per minute for adults, using evenly timed inhales and exhales. Coherent breath has been around for centuries, even though it has been more recently the topic of research. Zen Buddhist monks practice even breath as zazen. Why is even breath called coherent breath? Because, researchers have found that when people follow this slow breathing pattern, the heart, circulation, and nervous system are, what James Nestor describes in Breathe, "coordinated to peak efficiency." How are "Non-Profits" upholding mission statements, and how can tax payer dollars be more efficiently implemented? What and why are the common "denominators" connecting these Non- Profits? Have you looked for a therapist, coach, or psychiatrist this year, and felt frustrated by the tediousness of the search? Maybe you asked a few close friends for recommendations. You called one, but she's not taking new clients. The other one charges $425/hour and does not take insurance. Well, maybe then you realized, "I should try and find a more reasonably priced option." So you log on to your insurance plan's website, and found a list of providers. You Googled the names of the first six providers. Of the six, three are not practicing anymore, and one has a non-working phone number. Since that didn’t work, you decided to get curious about whether your company has any covered benefits. You’ve gotten some flyers in the mail, but you haven’t glanced at them carefully because time wasn’t of the essence then— but it is, now. And you need support, NOW. So you went straight through your company's benefits page, and tried to sign up for Spring Health or Lyra Health or Modern Health. You even poked around the Maven Clinic app, because even though they’re handling your fertility, they mention "maternal mental health". Maybe you got frustrated trying to activate or enroll on in covered benefits through your employer, or don’t have any of these benefits after all. As a last ditch resort, you Googled, and you stumble upon Alma, Headway, and Psychology Today. You combed through profiles for hours, used their filters, and selected a few providers to reach out to. The photos seemed nice? They are tagged as "having an integrative style"? 🤷‍♀️. You also browsed Zocdoc, because, hey, they helped you get a dentist appointment quickly, maybe they can get you one with a therapist just as easily? Later that evening, on Instagram, and you see 8 different ads for mental health apps and services in one hour. And then on YouTube; while listening to The Daily podcast, while watching Netflix. You signed up for BetterHelp. But after 6 weeks and cycling through 5 providers, you’re frustrated. This experience is overdue for disruption. Let's Talk Mental Health 🌟 Last week, I took a much-needed mental health day from work. Living in Oregon has its perks, like the recent legislation granting 40 hours of paid sick time, which made it feel easy. But it got me thinking... What if we flipped the script on how we view mental health and what it means to take care of ourselves? Imagine a world where we prioritize prevention, where we take a day off to recharge while we still have the energy to truly enjoy it, rather than waiting until we're completely drained. I'm all about action, so here are a few ideas to shake things up from a workplace policy perspective: 💛 Introduce designated mental health days with separate paid time off, because our well-being deserves its own bucket. People are less likely to use time for mental health if it impacts their vacation time. 💛 Offer paid breaks or more flexibility in schedules to allow for much-needed downtime. Trust me, it makes a world of difference- studies show that we are MORE productive when we give our brains a break. 💛 Break the stigma by openly discussing mental health at work. Asking questions like rate your personal satisfaction of your professional and home life on a scale of 1-10, or simply, how are you feeling today in a 1:1 can go a long way. . Almost everyone who previewed my new book told me that they could use a companion guide. ✨ The magic of Human Design doesn’t reveal itself through an intellectual exploration. It comes through embodied experience and reflection. Human Design can be a powerful tool of self-discovery, but not if you get stuck in trying to learn what all the components mean as a mental exercise. I often see clients get caught in their heads about their designs...partly because to learn the system, we have to break it down. But the magic happens when you start to notice how it clues you into your natural way of being through what feels good and right in your body and then reflect on your experiences through real life applications. For example, yesterday I was on a call with a client and she mentioned her current challenge is communicating her new offer. When we look at her Human Design chart, through her strategy she understands how to create content with ease. Through her profile, she understands more about the personality she brings into her content and offers. Then we can get into the specific gate activations to fine tune it even further to make sure her message resonates with the right people. It's not prescriptive, but it provides a roadmap to explore on the journey to figuring out what you can keep up with consistently because it feels right and natural to you...not what someone else thinks is the right way for you to market your business. This is just one example, but it's through these real world explorations that you're able to take your Human Design off the page and leverage it so that you can fully express your purpose in your life and work with ease.
