People aren’t giving you money to fund programs. They’re donating to see results. This is an easy principle to forget. At the end of the day, your donor wants to see a beneficial change for the people or cause they are supporting. Over time, we begin to buy into the high quality of our programs (your programs are awesome, btw) and we begin to forget this is not what the donor is funding. The donor is funding a changed life. A child saved. An outcome reached. Results. Tell the donor what she will accomplish with her donation. You'll get the results you're hoping for. #nonprofit #fundraising

Being transparent isn’t just releasing your audited financial statements. As an industry, we’ve equated transparency to releasing our 990s. But is there more? Could we be more transparent? Research by GuideStar shows that donors look for greater transparency. In the study, not only did increased transparency result in more income, but the donated amount was 11% higher. Some organizations have taken transparency to a new level. Engineers Without Borders publishes a “Failure Report” each year describing what didn’t work. You should also be more transparent with your staff. Some time ago, I worked at a nonprofit going through a difficult financial period. During this time, the leadership team was honest about the financial situation & the steps taken to solve the problem. Contrast this with a mid-size nonprofit my friend worked for as manager of the HR dept. The ED rarely shared info with staff. Most only knew what was shared in the annual report. One year the org was losing money, but it wasn't communicated until 10% of the staff was laid off one Friday. Staff panicked and several key employees left on their own. When you aren’t sharing good and bad news, staff will fill in the gaps with their own assumptions. Be more transparent with your staff and donors.

Here’s a pop quiz for all my nonprofit marketer friends: if you were put on the spot, could you name the six parts of a great nonprofit brand? In case you’re coming up short, I’ll give you a hint by listing out the first three. 🧪 The Elements: Vision, Mission, Values Just as with natural elements like oxygen or hydrogen, these are the building blocks from which everything else is made. ✏️ Messaging Statement KidGlov sometimes calls this a positioning statement because it really does two things—it describes who you are, and it differentiates you from similar organizations. In other words, it pinpoints your position. 💡 Tagline This should be concise and memorable, capturing the emotion of your brand in the fewest words possible. When you put all of the pieces together, people will begin to recall what your nonprofit is all about. This strengthens your bond with donors and advocates, relationships with the people you serve, and internal culture by giving people something simple and easy to understand to rally around. New business is one of those responsibilities that should be fully integrated into your daily schedule. But for a lot of agency leaders, it's not. I think it’s why new business plans fail. Most value-based care conversations focus on facilitating the payment mechanism, which is important, but Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health, wants to talk more about alignment.
