NY Tech Week has been exhilarating, dynamic, diverse, and inspiring! So many organic connections were made between investors, founders, and rising change-makers, and we learned so much about the current landscape and the future of innovation. The Fourth Effect, in partnership with EisnerAmper, hosted a vibrant panel discussion "Let's Talk About Boards" at Savills with uplifting expert speakers Mina E. Black and Caroline McCaffery. The Fourth Effect founders Breen Sullivan and Katrin de Haën are on a mission to empower female & minority executives to advise on governance boards and contribute their wealth of knowledge to the world by connecting them with startups seeking to establish boards and scale. So many founders in particular attended this event, and from the lively discussion afterwards, it's clear we all walked away thinking a whole lot more about the importance of proactivity, diversity & inclusion, and expertise when establishing company boards. AcceleratorCON, New York City Economic Development Corporation, and Civic Hall co-hosted the panel "Reimagining Accelerators for Tomorrow's Startups." Especial focus was given to tailoring accelerator programming to the startup cohort's unique skills and needs, peer-to-peer learning, intentional considerations to engage diverse founders, industry-agnostic accelerators, follow-on support and investor networks, as well as the rise of pre-accelerator accelerators. So much great info was shared at this event! My friends at Kaplak Ventures hosted a climate tech demo night at Brown Rudnick LLP on Times Square, where we heard enthusiastic pitch presentations from a diverse cohort of startups, from deep tech to arts-based solutions, including aich2, carbogenics, TeamStack.ai, Tesleon LLC, and Tolam Earth. Copenhagen-based Kaplak Ventures just partnered with New Haven-based climate incubator ClimateHaven to host the 3-month ReGen Accelerator program for seed-stage startups addressing the climate issues of today. Health x Climate: I have spent a lot of time thinking about the intersection of climate and health, so I appreciated the City Futures: HealthTech and ClimateTech Intersections panel discussion during NY Tech Week, with Ben Furnas, Sara Holoubek, and Joel Cesare as panelists. They highlighted the work happening in NYC; even though subway use helps our GHG emissions, there is still opportunity to prepare the city and electrify our buildings for the changes to come. Some key takeaways 🔄 Health + Climate: The effects of climate change impact our health and our health decisions impact climate change. We often think about climate and health in silos but they are very connected.  🔥 Heat waves: Hotter temperatures are the biggest risk to health from climate change, so we must prepare now. I learned about NYC's AC giveaway to support vulnerable communities.  🤓 New ideas: There is much opportunity to engage in mental cross training and leverage learnings from analogous spaces and industries at this intersection. A new report produced by the Center for New York City Affairs in partnership with the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at The New School and the Center for Community Uplift The Brookings Institution reveals racial and economic inequities in New York City’s public transportation subsidies. Examining subsidies across the city’s ten transit systems by race and income, the report finds inequities between subsidies for the NYC Ferry service compared with the Fair Fares program for the MTC’s subway and bus riders, and underscores the importance of assessing policies and budgets through a #racialequity lens. I'll join Louise Story and Ebony Reed, who have a new book on the topic entitled "Fifteen Cents on the Dollar," as well as experts Ivy Onyeador, Gary Stewart, and Olori Lolade Siyonbola. Median Black wealth is up 60% over pre-pandemic levels. But the gap between Black household wealth and White household wealth persists -- narrowed as a percentage but increased by absolute dollars. This gap is the product of generations of discrimination, by the government and in the private market. BLOWN AWAY to have been interviewed alongside such trailblazers for this Fortune piece by Allie Garfinkle that details the state of Venture Capital as it relates to DEI. The piece highlights Primary Venture Partners recent launch of Factor Fellowship, a new nonprofit connecting untapped, exceptional talent in New York City to careers in venture-backed startups, spearheaded by Lisa Lewin, Tom Ogletree and Benjamin Sun. In the piece, I chat about the impact we hope to make for underrepresented founders with Peerless - our $1M pitch competition. TOP QUOTES from the piece... Severe mental illness remains one of the most underserved areas in mental health, possibly because it is difficult to address with the type of virtual, easy-to-scale models that VCs love to back. What Angel Investors Are Saying About Our Startup Ecosystem Yesterday, I led a breakfast meeting with leading angel investors hosted by ACG New Jersey and Robert Johnson. Here are some takeaways from our discussion. New Jersey has: 1. Tremendous Untapped Potential and Enthusiasm The growth I’ve seen just in the past few years has been breathtaking to witness. We've never seen so many New Jersey entrepreneurs making an impact on science and technology, and that pace of progress shows no sign of slowing down. 2. Density and Diversity As our nation’s most densely populated state, New Jersey is also one of the most diverse states, with a strong inflow of migrant #innovation from India and East Asia. 3. Many Industry Value Chains Represented New Jersey is a national leader in pharmaceutical, chemicals and healthcare innovation, which creates opportunities for local startups to integrate themselves with and learn from established leaders in their industries. 4. Strong Programs that Support Entrepreneurship The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and CSIT do a phenomenal job making working capital available to innovative new businesses. 5. Universities that bring smart people together Rutgers, Princeton, Stevens, NJIT, Rowan, FDU and others serve as a lightning rods that brings brilliant entrepreneurs together from all over the world.
