The Innovators Dilemma that I experienced at HP in 2006-2007, missing the touchscreen smartphone and owning the OS, is happening to Apple now. Putting operations and finance people in charge instead of visionary leaders with strong customer experience focus, leads to linear product improvements and missing the next big thing. Yes, Apple will remain good at what products it has, and will not be worth nearly as much. I totally agree with the author about the Vision Pro. Mainstream users will not wear it and there are other social problems. AI needs visionary leadership and guardrails ASAP. The Innovator Dilemma by Clayton Christensen is a must read to understand why tech companies fail to develop the next big thing.

"Thirteen percent of venture GPs don’t plan to raise another fund as the LP pullback spoils fundraising efforts, according to PitchBook’s semiannual VC Tech Survey. That’s double the rate in H1 2023, when 6% said they had no plans to raise another fund. Nearly half of venture firms—44% of those surveyed in mid-2023—had previously pushed back their plans to re-enter the fundraising process, as institutional investors became increasingly concerned with overexposure to the asset class. Many of those GPs were emerging managers who jumped into venture in 2019 or 2020 when the LP market was capable of supporting far more funds than today’s environment. But with exits still relatively slow in the first half of 2024, many managers have been attempting to raise a second fund without significant cash distributions to their LPs. That has driven activity in the secondaries venture market as GPs scramble to show returns. A quarter of GP respondents said that they were becoming 'more active' in the secondaries market because of the current environment.  A small cohort has already packed up shop. Hard tech VC Countdown Capital shuttered its operations earlier this year, citing market conditions and heightened investor demand that have priced out smaller early-stage firms."

Now is not the time for innovation to take a backseat. Where are the LPs willing to invest despite the dry IPO market? No guts, no glory as my Father used to say. He flew F4s and wrote about it in his book "Rolling Thunder." Now that takes courage, investing in 2024 does not. Do we really want other countries to pull ahead in AI and digital health solutions (especially mental health?!)? NextSense has technology that is literally sitting on a shelf due to the lack of courage from those on Sand Hill, which is because LPs aren't giving them dry powder. What is the technology that is landlocked? It's called Nesos, and you can read about how it helped 25 women achieve 74% therapeutic response to MDD (major depressive disorder) in the Journal of Affective Disorders, Nov 2022, which the FDA granted us a breakthrough designation given treatment (called Standard of Care) usually results in 55% response on the Hamilton D-17. So where might this technology go? Singapore. Why? Because the Sovereign Fund of Singapore is willing to invest in this amazing technology and I'm out of options in the US. If you know an LP (limited partner) who contributes to a VC fund, tell them America needs their investment. This country was built on the backs of ultra-wealthy and these are the times that need those who have the means to step up!
