Have you ever thought about how compliance laws are a lot like design systems? I recently spoke with Joe Toscano, founder of DataGrade, and he made a fascinating comparison. Joe explained how Brad Frost's atomic design methodology took an engineering approach to design: → Creating standardized elements → Templatizing them → Scaling them across a system This led to the rise of human interface guidelines (HIGs) from tech giants like Google, Apple, and IBM. But here's where it gets really interesting: Joe argued that privacy laws and regulations are like the ultimate HIG for product design. Just like how HIGs provide rules and constraints for design systems... Compliance laws set guardrails for what we can and can't do with user data. If we design something that isn't compliant, it doesn't matter how sleek the UI is. Legal requirements become the top-level framework we have to design within. That's what got Joe into studying laws - to understand this new "design system" for building products. So next time you're cursing a lengthy legal doc or trying to make sense of GDPR... Make a Mark began as an idea in 2014 — why don’t we take the traditional hack-a-thon structure and transform it into a design and development marathon to support nonprofit organizations? Today we're launching our newest candidate quality-of-life feature on Ropes - IDE themes. There's a universal dislike for the rigid IDEs that assessment co's force on candidates. These code editors are slow, clunky, and missing the styes/shortcuts that developers enjoy. Developers are unique, and we work in unique ways. Ropes offers two new options to let candidates keep their style: (1) First, many employers on Ropes allow candidates to work in their own IDEs entirely. We've developed a way to gather insights like you were in the room, while allowing developers to use their daily environments. (2) For cases that need a browser-based IDE - we're giving the ability for candidates to choose their style/editor setup before the assessment starts - so they're comfortable when it begins. --- My bet is that if we build a great experience for candidates, we'll be building a great platform for evaluators, too. We've wrapped up AppCon. Special thanks to the leadership & staff of ACT | The App Association for helping making our voices heard. I'll close with this story... We met with the Republican side of the Senate Finance Committee on the R&D Tax Credit/ S174 issue. They are currently blocking the HR 7024. The exchange: Q: The House passed common sense tax reform on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis. Why can't the Senate? A: The Senate is more "deliberative". We called (condescending) BS. Then they heard it from 4 tech businesses facing existential threats to their own survival from its own government. While they "deliberate", American businesses struggle and jobs are lost. This isn't abstract. The truth is the Senate Rs created this problem when they passed the 2017 TCJA. It needs reform now. That takes leadership. They can compromise but choose not to. Senate Rs: Stop "deliberating" and do your job. Stop placing your own political benefit above those of hardworking Americans.

When I see the term “shift left” used in marketing, I’m surprised at how often the content revolves entirely around surfacing issues to developers (the easy part) with no discussion around actual remediation (the hard part). The discussion with Jason Fried, Co-Founder and CEO of 37signals, during a recent ProducTea with Leah episode (#42) was great. A particular one-minute segment (~14:20) really stuck with me. When asked about failures, Jason states: 🗣 “I don’t really think about failure. How does evolution work? Evolution is not sitting there using energy thinking about the wing shape that didn’t work. The wings that worked let’s make them even better...What’s working? Let’s do more of that. Let’s evolve.” This aligns perfectly with the concept of “slightly better problems” from The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. It’s a never-ending upward spiral. The key takeaway? Don’t ignore failures, but don’t dwell on them either. Focus on what works, refine it, and evolve. This approach ensures continuous improvement without getting bogged down by setbacks. #ProductManagement #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement

Here is the new demo video for LEFT JOIN for 2 Timeplus Versioned Streams. Before I talk more about this feature, let me "show off" what I learned from Mark Needham. Mark created a lot of great terminal-based videos to demo how powerful and easy-to-use for #ClickHouse. I grabbed him during KSL. He kindly shared his workflow: how to write Python code to automate iTerm2, how to record the talk and combine them together 👍 Today I got some time to test his script. You can just keep appending new rows with same primary key and new value overrides the old one. We support INNER JOIN 2 versioned streams long time ago. This time, per user feedback, we added the LEFT JOIN support. In 👇 example, you create a dimension table with a list of products, and an order table. MVP. MDP. MVE. SLC. SMURF. What else might you call your minimum viable product? More importantly, does it matter? Ok folks — I'm trying to do more of this *video thing* so bear with me as I get better at recording and editing and find a place to talk to you that doesn't include ✈️ noises. I've seen quite a few posts lately talking about how the MVP isn't what we as entrepreneurs should be pursuing these days. Instead, we should focus on building a [𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘔𝘝𝘗 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦] instead. The question got me thinking and led me down a bit of a rabbit hole. AI is innovating a variety of industries across the US and Agriculture is no exception. 🐄 My new friend, Catie McVey, has created a new "Agtech" startup that uses patented 3D Modeling and Machine Learning algorithms to evaluate the health of cows by looking at specific characteristics such as hoof morphology and facial characteristics. Working with her to architect how to get source data from "The Stockyards" to "The Cloud" has been a lot of fun. I am constantly discovering new ways AI can make an impact in industries from legal, to healthcare and now agriculture! Over my time developing with #ReactNative, I have gotten the question "Do you build with Expo or the React Native CLI?" the most from other experts in the field. While I have only built apps with Expo, I keep discovering more and more ways to go around the few shortcomings it may have. Apart from being able to develop apps way easier and simpler due to not having to build native builds from scratch each time you make a change, Expo is incredibly powerful for building cross-platform applications extremely quickly. I have been looking up and down the expo documentation, looking for new APIs to play around with in this new project I have been working on, and every single time I look, I see a new API that sounds incredibly interesting to me. To everyone that wants to get into React Native or Mobile App Development, I absolutely recommend they check out Expo, as it makes building apps so much easier for both platforms. One or maybe 100+ environmental effects ought to be enough right? While my indicator effects pack uploads to the asset store I'm also going to be building a VR ready environmental effects pack. Can someone show me a GL design that is better than this mockup? WIP of some stuff that's coming soon in Doss. Still need to put together the pivot table report builder, account/entry filtering + sorting. Major considerations: 1. Where do you put totals? Forcing them below every account seems heavy-handed and often overloads information. 2. How do you handle grouping and nesting of accounts and sub-accounts? 3. Ariglad YC W23's website has gone through a big update and we've included the video from our successful Product Hunt launch on our homepage! It's funny - this week I've been working to setup a couple different tech platforms and have gone through my own share of frustration as I try look for answers in their knowledge bases only to discover they are outdated.
