To select this year's Top Workplaces, the Times Union and WorkplaceDynamics invited companies with at least 35 employees in the Capital Region to participate. A combination of print and online ads and direct marketing contact lists were used to solicit nominations from employers and employees.

WorkplaceDynamics invited 639 companies to participate and complete the Top Workplaces survey. Sixty-nine companies completed the survey. The surveyed companies employ 18,937 people in the Capital Region and 8,193 of those employees filled out the survey either on paper or online.

Employees responded to a set of statements using a scale of 1 to 7, i.e. strongly disagree, disagree, etc.

Based on survey results, the Top 5 large employers, Top 15 midsize employers and Top 25 small employers were selected.

A response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Capital Region was required. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer local employees were required to have at least 30 responders. Employers were encouraged to survey all employees, but large employers could choose to randomly sample their Capital Region employees, with a minimum of 500 employees included in the sample for employers of 2,500 or fewer.

Employers have been categorized by size because smaller employers tend to score higher than large employers. The employers were then ranked based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements.
