This week, for the Inspiring Perspectives 🎙️podcast at thinkPARALLAX, I had the pleasure of chatting with Christina Berger, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, ESG, and Public Policy at the recommence, and circular economy contributor, ThredUp. There was so much to chat about because ThredUp is dealing with such a large-scale problem and opportunity: convincing consumers to think secondhand first, providing a service to brands to resell their valuable/used goods, and dealing with the excess products that we've made but have reached their end of life. Essentially, ThredUp is a tech company tackling fashion's overproduction, overconsumption, and underutilization problems, and Christina is right in the middle of it all. We spoke about the circular economy, sustainability leadership, communications strategy, stakeholder engagement, policy, LCAs, greenwashing, and plenty more. The LGBTQ+ community has a multifaceted impact on economic growth, as businesses, consumers, and part of the workforce. LGBTQ-owned businesses stimulate economic activity in underserved segments, with founders and leaders acting as role models and mentors for aspiring members of the community. LGBTQ consumers and allies also wield their purchasing power to drive brands toward supporting equal rights and inclusive marketing. And as employees, they push for change from within by bringing diverse perspectives and advocating for inclusive policies, thus creating a more engaged workforce and improved innovation and productivity. Our 6th piece of research on Business and Racial Justice in the U.S was released this week. I and our teams have been committed to this critical research for the last five years. Despite the current ongoing debate, discourse and division, the work of racial justice and DEI must continue. Regardless of the rhetoric and the attacks, the data shows that there is increasing desire for the work across communities, and the benefit from it to employees and consumers. First day of Walmart Comms School!🍎 In partnership with the University of Arkansas, the Global Communications team held its first-ever session to kick-off the ✨Next Generation Communications✨ certification course series designed to shape best-in-class communicators (see what I did there?)! Allyson Park provided some powerful insights, sharing that we - corporate communicators - exist to bring Walmart's story to life, which drives market value. This is so vital because an estimated 25% of a company's market value is directly attributed to reputation.📈😯 So what are some ways that a best-in-class comms team can work toward increasing market value for their company? 🎨 Be proactive in the "white space" by dreaming up ideas and opportunities where nothing exists today. 💥 Be bold and take big swings, keeping your focus on impact over activities (think quality over quantity). 🏈 Maintain a dedicated offense with a strong defense, remembering that your associates are your most valuable stakeholders. Celebrating World Turtle Day: Honoring Our Ancient Reptilian Friends This morning, I woke up to a prompt on my laptop reminding me that today is World Turtle Day. Intrigued, I did some research and found myself feeling truly happy about the existence of these remarkable creatures. Every year on May 23rd, we celebrate World Turtle Day to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect turtles and tortoises, and their rapidly diminishing habitats. These ancient reptiles, which have roamed the Earth for over 200 million years, symbolize various virtues and hold significant cultural meanings: Longevity and Wisdom: Turtles and tortoises are symbols of endurance and wisdom due to their impressive lifespans. Patience and Determination: Their slow, steady nature teaches us that perseverance and patience can lead to success, as illustrated in Aesop's fable, "The Tortoise and the Hare." Protection and Resilience: Their hard shells represent protection and the ability to withstand challenges, embodying resilience. Connection to Earth and Water: Turtles bridge the realms of land and water, symbolizing ecological balance and harmony. Mythology and Religion: Hindu Mythology: The world is believed to rest on the back of a giant turtle. Chinese Mythology: The turtle is one of the four sacred animals, symbolizing the north, endurance, and strength. Cultural Symbolism: Turtles are often seen as guardians and symbols of stability in various cultures. Established in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle Day encourages conservation efforts and educates the public on how to support these incredible creatures. Top takeaways from the "Beyond the Basics: A #GenerativeAI Masterclass for Business Communicators" at #IABC24. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a workshop led by Matt Russell from the Mayo Clinic. The masterclass focused on leveraging #ChatGPT and other AI tools to grow and enhance business communications. Here are my top takeaways (first draft thanks to ChatGPT;) 1. Expand AI Use: Start using tools individually and then scale their uses across teams for enhanced productivity. 2. AI in Project Management: Integrate AI into project planning to streamline processes and boost efficiency. 3. Promote AI Integration: Develop strategies to advocate for AI adoption, keeping in line with policy and culture, while staying on top of advancements.
