#usps PSLW INCREASES APPROVED. As predicted the change was approved although various organizations filed to have it stopped. The PRC was not 100% convinced on USPS analysis of the market share and numbers they presented and the effect to the market but moved to approve anyway. I believe that USPS is moving to have shipper negotiate directly oz based Ground Advantage NSA’s. It will be interesting to see how carriers provide new services to fill any gaps in the market. July 9 the PRC filed order #7260 -Order Acknowledging Price Adjustments for Parcel Select The ordering paragraphs include: The Commission acknowledges the proposed price changes to be consistent with applicable law.

Warehouse Wisdom Wednesday! Let's breakdown some warehouse basics. This week: We're talking about the dock. Last week we covered the yard and now we're hitting the dock. The dock is where the action on the inside of the warehouse begins. It starts with the dock door where trucks are parked to be loaded or unloaded. It includes the space on the inside of the dock where product is then staged. Key components of the dock include: dock doors, dock levelers, bumpers, dock lights, dock seals, barriers, vehicle restraints and more. The dock is a critical point in both the inbound and outbound processes. For inbound, this is where the process of the operation begins. It is important to get your quality and inventory checks right at the dock to set yourself up for success throughout your other processes. For outbound, this is your last chance to make sure the shipment is leaving the way it should. Make sure it is packaged correctly, secured properly and most of all, the correct shipment. An effective and efficient dock can set you up for operational success inside your building and customer satisfaction outside your building. Warehouse Wisdom Wednesday! Let's breakdown some warehouse basics. This week: We're talking storage options inside the warehouse. Last week we covered the inbound process but before we put that material away we need to understand where we can actually put it. Now, we use the warehouse to store goods and if you've been following along we covered the different types of warehouses a few weeks ago. For this week, we are covering the different types of storage inside those warehouse types. So let's breakdown some of the different storage types: 1. Pallet racking - as the name suggests, this is specifically for placing pallets on. There are multiple variations of pallet rack including selective pallet racking, drive-in racking, push back racking and pallet flow racking. 2. Shelving - typically shelving is utilized to store eaches, case storage and small item storage. Shelving types can include static shelves, mobile shelves and bin shelving. 3. Cantilever racking - this is the type of racking that you see at Home Depot that lumber is stored on. In the warehouse it could be utilized for long and heavy items like lumber, pipe or poles. 4. ASRS - automated storage and retrieval systems are cube based storage systems that utilize robots to store and retrieve items. Typically they utilize totes to store items in but they can also be made for pallet storage. 5. Bulk storage - this is when pallets or larger bulky items are simply stored on the floor within your warehouse. 6. Carton flow racking - this is shelving like but instead of a flat surface it is installed at an angle and has rollers to allow cartons to continue to come forward on the shelf. 7. GOH - short for garment on hanger, this storage is utilized for apparel that is stored on the hanger. It essentially looks like lots of closet rods in racking. These are seven types of storage options that can be found in the warehouse and there are many different variations for all of these. No matter what storage you choose, it is critical to evaluate your storage needs based on product type, velocity of product and storage density needed. What should shippers expect to see for the remainder of 2024? As we’ve watched what’s happening in the truckload, parcel, and LTL markets, we’ve seen trends that make it more challenging for shippers to obtain favorable pricing. Here is a quick summary of three key items that should be on every shipper’s radar screen. First, the general consensus is that the truckload market has bottomed out. When you listen to the earnings calls from carriers like Knight-Swift, J.B. Hunt and Werner, their message is pretty direct: Carriers are basically saying they're going to commit more capacity to the spot market until the contract market rebounds. Second, you should expect further substantial increases in parcel rates beyond those at the first of the year. Like the truckload carriers, parcel providers are dealing with a difficult market and looking for new ways to increase revenue such as including distance traveled, weight, and extra services in pricing. Third, know that the LTL carriers have elevated their pricing game when it comes to collecting data. In many cases they know more about your shipment characteristics than you do and they are pricing accordingly. CNBC today published the article linked below stating, "America's freight recession is nearing its end...with retail orders and rates headed higher." There are just a few problems: [1]: The article cites data from Motive showing truck visits to distribution centers of the top 5 retailers are up 30% year-over-year as evidence. While Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, and Amazon are indeed large entities (assuming these are the 5 retailers mentioned), they are a small fraction of the overall freight market. And I highly question this figure's accuracy, as Census Bureau data aren't showing sharp increases in retail sales in these sectors to match. [2]: The article ignores that Cass's shipments data for June showed a steep slide to the worst reading in 4 years. Cass shipments is directionally very predictive of freight market dynamics. [3]: The article states, "Data across the retail sector shows year-over-year order increases through June, including at department stores, electronics, and apparel retailers with bricks-and-mortar locations (32.9%), home improvement (24.4%), grocery & superstores (22.1%), and discount retailers & wholesalers (13%)." These numbers can't be accurate nationally, as we aren't seeing increases in real sales or real inventories even close to these totals for these industries based on Census Bureau data. Implication: retail trade is NOT the primary driver of domestic trucking activity. Rather, its domestic manufacturing, and domestic manufacturing output continues to be weak. We are finally seeing signs that seasonally adjusted manufacturing output found a bottom in several industries in late Q1/early Q2 2024, but we still have a way to go before this freight recession ends for trucking firms. #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #shipsandshipping #trucking #freight https://lnkd.in/gAUpaa-Q
