    The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is home to more than 10,000 animals representing more than 600 species worldwide. Of these species, more than 34 are endangered and 11 are threatened, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. For more than 95 years, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has evolved to be a cornerstone of the community and a destination inspiring the appreciation and conservation of many of the earth's most amazing animals.

    The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's history begins…

    The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is home to more than 10,000 animals representing more than 600 species worldwide. Of these species, more than 34 are endangered and 11 are threatened, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. For more than 95 years, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has evolved to be a cornerstone of the community and a destination inspiring the appreciation and conservation of many of the earth's most amazing animals.

    The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's history begins very modestly, it started with a work trip and led to reindeers.

    In the roaring 1920s, the Columbus City Mayor and some other leaders went to St. Louis to learn about the city’s water system. During their trip, they visited the area zoo and watched children laughing while observing monkeys. They agreed something similar should be established in Columbus.

    And so the seed was planted for the future of the Columbus Zoo. Read more on our detailed history.

    The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has connected people to amazing wildlife from around the world since our founding in 1927. In the process, we have established ourselves as one of the leading zoological institutions in the country while honoring our commitment to making a positive impact on wildlife and wild places.

    It's our unwavering commitment to our mission - to lead and inspire by connecting people and wildlife - that has spurred our evolution from a little-known Ohio zoo into the world-renowned Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

    Today, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium welcomes more than 2.2 million guests annually, provides expert care to more than 10,000 animals representing 600 species, and supports more than 75 conservation projects in over 20 countries around the world.

    With the approach of our 100th anniversary in 2027, we are inspired to think big and chart a bold new course for our next century.
