  • Decarbonization requires more access to and consensus around energy data

    Utility Dive

To achieve the goals of changing the energy system, we need industry-wide, global data standards. If we are all aiming at different targets when it comes to measuring and tracking energy use, it becomes prohibitive for corporations and users to engage and measure their progress in the overall marketplace.

  • A conservative climate change activist on poisonous partisanship

    Minnesota Reformer

Why should we care about negative partisanship? Because our new reality — while not unprecedented— requires an even greater attention to reason, logic, and science than ever before. As the conservative journal National Review declared, “The battle will be fought over shifting sands as new threats emerge — climate change and pandemics, first of all — as new technologies are developed, and as changes in the global distribution of power erode the existing system.”

As the conservative journal National Review declared, “The battle will be fought over shifting sands as new threats emerge — climate change and pandemics, first of all — as new technologies are developed, and as changes in the global distribution of power erode the existing system.”

A society that views everything through the lens of negative partisanship is ill-equipped to deal with a slow but steady, long term crisis like climate change. Rather than working through hard problems with rigorous, good-faith inquiry and debate, we unleash personal attacks on the other clan and question the motivations of an opponent’s belief rather than debate the merit of an individual idea or hypothesis.

    Biographical Summary

Arthur Thomas Pfefer (“Artie”) was born in 1942 in St. Paul, the son of Ruth and Victor Pfefer.

After their father died at a young age, Artie and his brother, Howard, were raised by Ruth in the Highland Park neighborhood.

A charismatic and active boy, Artie spent his youth and excelled on St. Paul’s baseball fields and hockey rinks and would often socialize with his friends in the Highland Village, where his mother worked in a department store in order to make ends meet.

Upon graduating from Central High School in 1960, Artie pursued his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota. Then, with the help of an Army ROTC scholarship, he enrolled at the University Of Minnesota School Of Law where he served as Editor of the Minnesota Law Review and was granted membership in the Order of the Coif.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude, Artie was hired by Maslon, Edelman, Borman & Brand and married his sweetheart, DeeDee Cohen, in the summer of 1967. Prior to starting his career in law, Artie set out to fulfill an obligation to his country and was deployed to Vietnam as a Captain in the US Army. Six months after the birth of his son, Dean, Artie was killed in action in Pleiku, Vietnam on July 25, 1969.
