Contract Price Increases Offset Seasonal Slump, Boosting #DRAM Q1 Revenue by 5.1%, Says TrendForce Corporation TrendForce reveals that the #DRAM industry experienced a 5.1% revenue increase in 1Q24 compared to the previous quarter. This growth—reaching US$18.35 billion—was driven by rising contract prices for mainstream products, with the price increase being more significant than in 4Q23. As a result, most companies in the industry continued to see revenue growth. The top three suppliers experienced a decline in shipments in the first quarter, demonstrating the industry’s off-season effect. Additionally, downstream companies had higher inventory levels, which led to a significant reduction in #procurement volume. As for ASP, the top three suppliers continued to benefit from contract price increases seen in 4Q23. With inventory levels still healthy, there was a strong intention to raise prices. #Mobile DRAM saw the highest price increase out of all applications thanks to strong sales of Chinese #smartphones. On the other hand, the price increase for consumer DRAM was the lowest among all applications, as manufacturers still need to clear their inventories. Samsung recently showcased groundbreaking advancements in semiconductor technology at the Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF) 2024 in San Jose, California. Under the theme “Empowering the AI Revolution,” Samsung revealed its reinforced process technology roadmap, introducing the cutting-edge 2nm (SF2Z) and 4nm (SF4U) nodes, alongside an integrated Samsung AI Solutions platform. "At a time when numerous technologies are evolving around AI, the key to its implementation lies in high-performance, low-power semiconductors," said Dr. Siyoung Choi, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. The SF2Z process node, featuring optimized backside power delivery network (BSPDN) technology, promises significant enhancements in power, performance, and area (PPA), and is set for mass production in 2027. The SF4U node, scheduled for mass production in 2025, offers high-value 4nm variant improvements. Samsung also confirmed that preparations for the 1.4nm node are on track for 2027 mass production. Emphasizing its GAA technology, Samsung's advancements in gate-all-around structures are pivotal for AI applications, with mass production of its second-generation 3nm process (SF3) commencing later this year. Moreover, Samsung's turnkey AI platform integrates strengths from its Foundry, Memory, and Advanced Package (AVP) businesses, streamlining supply chain management and reducing time to market. Tackling Data Retention in SSDs (by Anil Burra from Intelligent Memory) 🤩 "SSDs have conquered the market due to their speed, durability, energy efficiency, and small form factor. However, write endurance and data retention are concerns in #embedded and #industrial applications, especially as the technology moves to ever smaller nodes." (Anil Burra) With the scaling of #NAND #flash #technology to higher densities (e.g., Triple-Level-Cell or Quad Level-Cell) and smaller process nodes, data retention becomes more challenging due to increased cell-to-cell interference and reduced margins for charge storage. Therefore, newer #technologies may have shorter specified data retention periods compared to older, more robust #SLC (Single-Level-Cell) or #MLC (Mul ti-Level-Cell) #NAND products. Two key factors affect data retention, the period over which #flashmemory can store #data without loss or corruption, in #NANDflash cells: program/erase (P/E) cycling and operating temperature. Wrapping up #DAC61, I am curious about the decision to rebrand the event as "DAC, The Chips to Systems Conference," instead of the traditional "Design Automation Conference." This is not just a simple change of words — consider the keynote speakers. Last year, they were all #EDA luminaries:  Mike Ellow (recently appointed CEO of Siemens EDA), Lip-Bu Tan (former Cadence CEO), Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli (founder of both Cadence and Synopsys) and Walden C. ( Wally ) Rhines - long time CEO of Mentor Graphics. In contrast, this year, the keynote speakers were Jim Keller (Tenstorrent), Gary Patton (Intel) and Alan Lee (ADI) - all "Chip to Systems" executives. Is this a coincidence? Does it reflect EDA companies taking a lesser role at DAC? Siemens EDA (Siemens Digital Industries Software) was a notable exception as a Diamond sponsor, investing in a sizable booth and team, and hosting guests for a Giants' game at Oracle Park. (The famous Denali party is long gone...) Or is it because part of Design Automation is increasingly being done within "Chips to Systems" companies? Just look at Jim Keller discussing the importance of #opensource and Alan Lee explaining that "Product Design is Complex." What do you think? #Designautomation #chipdesign

Every single person on your team — no matter what their position is — should know and live by your company’s values. When I first joined Coherent Corp. (known as II-VI at the time) as a board member, we had 7 values. They were printed on the back of everyone’s business card but, still, I could never remember them all. In the wake of a large acquisition, I was walking around various facilities and chatting with everyone. I asked if anyone knew what our company’s values were — and no one knew them! That was a hint of an opportunity. I realized that the acquisition was a period of transformation for the company, and it was an opportunity to revisit our values. I remember studying the values of all the S&P 500 companies for inspiration, taking into consideration the founding values of II-VI as well as the values of the companies we had acquired. Eventually, I decided on: ICARE which stands for integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and enthusiasm. Taken in that order, they have allowed our team to declare “I care” as the primary reason for working at Coherent and helping change the world. I firmly believe that values (and sticking to them) are integral to a company’s success. This might be a little bold to say but as far as I know, today, there’s no one in the company that doesn’t know what our values are.

I agree. Many companies like ARM have shown the value that can be added as a Fabless Semiconductor design house. (Soft IPs) . I think India could start as a Soft IP house. Its people are already driving this industry at many companies worldwide. SCL (Semiconductors Complex Ltd. at Chandigarh) was a foundry built at the right time in India and such efforts can be kick-started again (if the Govt is keen on it) but becoming a design house can be the first priority.

THE BEST #Semiconductor Equipment Supplier Rankings for 2023 The 2023 TechInsights Customer Satisfaction Survey TechInsights received feedback from more than 60% of the #chip market and 66% of subsystems customers for this year’s survey. The survey spans 2 ½ months and covers five languages. Worldwide participants were asked to rate equipment suppliers among fourteen categories based on three key factors: supplier performance, customer service, and product performance. 1,859 surveys were returned, resulting in 25,489 total responses. The TechInsights annual Customer Satisfaction Survey is the only publicly available opportunity since 1988 for customers to provide feedback for suppliers of: semiconductor equipment and subsystems. The 10 BEST and THE BEST awards provide special recognition to suppliers that are rated highest by their customers.
