TikTok Shop has been a powerhouse for Flagaholics summer campaign, generating an average of 25 orders per day over the last week. I wanted to take a second to sit down and organize my thoughts (/rant) on the marketplace, and see if anyone else has had any shared experiences: Understanding the Algorithm: One of the most intriguing aspects of the platform is its potential for virality. It's been a fascinating learning journey to decipher the two main principles the algorithm values: 1.)  quantity over quality, and 2.) homogeneity across your content’s value propositions. I’ve observed 2 nearly- identical videos perform drastically differently, which further solidifies the fact that it prefers quantity. Our best results have come from posting 2-4x daily, with videos consisting of 6-10 second low-effort product-centric short form dynamic media with strong, captivating 1-2 second hooks. By posting consistently over the past month, our page has generated over a million organic views, 100k likes, 3k comments, and 6k shares. Inventory Management Challenges: As we've experienced, videos can unexpectedly go viral, leading to a sudden surge in demand for a particular product. This can be a double-edged sword, as your worst performing product can sell out within minutes, leaving you to decide whether to reorder or consider it a stroke of luck. This challenge is particularly pronounced for vendors with a high variety of SKU’s, making it increasingly difficult to accurately forecast inventory for the summer demand cycle. Affiliate Center: I’ll be blunt, I hate the affiliate center. Affiliates are required to have 10k followers before applying to the center, and from there, they’re able to request free product samples in return for shoppable UGC from their personal page. From our experience, most of these affiliates had been fortunate enough to have 1-2 videos go “viral”, develop an artificial following, and have their next videos severely underperform (>200 video avg.). Sending out free samples costs around $14 per sample, and I just haven’t seen the value yet considering how poorly our received UGC has performed. On top of that, the commissions on units sold reach upwards of 30% in some cases too, leading me to question the long-term viability of the program. However, my one rebuttal is once in a blue moon, you’ll stumble upon a competent content creator who builds you a masterpiece, drives sales through the roof, and recuperates sunk costs from other samples.

In anticipation of joining the 👂 Listen Ventures squad 👂 next week, I have been (for the third time) reading through their consumer-obsessed deep dive: Mindsets from the Middle, focused on midlife womanhood. As someone who also (like the author of the piece, Ellen Wilcox) has yet to go through "it," I found myself thinking about 👩‍👧 my mom 👩‍👧 and her experience through midlife, and it was such a special opportunity to see through HER lens 🔍 Sharing some of my favorite quotes from the piece: 😔 Suffering seems to be revered as some sort of natural and therefore acceptable part of a woman's journey. We heard stories where pain, discomfort, and physical malfunction were dismissed as inevitabilities of the woman's experience or, worse, celebrated as rites of passage. For many of these midlife women, "grit at all costs" becomes the name of the game, and sacrifice is the assumed byproduct. ⚖️ They're navigating peaks, pivots, and promotions at work. They're relied on by young children, elderly parents, senile pets, and midlife partners - they're orchestrating the entire life cycle of humanity at one time. With zero extra capacity on hand and a clear and unwavering prioritization framework in place, it's the needs of midlife women that are first to be "crowded out." 🌀 Midlife women are in the strange position of simultaneously having too many and too few solutions at their disposal. A growing number of wellness products, potions, platforms, and services tout claims and make promises for personal betterment. Better-for-you everything crowds grocery store aisles and Instagram feeds. With endless options, it feels as though the wellness category is adding anxiety more than relieving it. 🪷 The majority of women who shared their midlife experiences with us chose to tell stories about challenge, change, sacrifice, trauma, and trade-offs. Their words painted poignant pictures of loss, self-doubt, self-destruction, regret, and pain - many of which inspired the insights and opportunities already explored in this work. But to leave it at that would be to miss half the picture, because despite the negatives, their stories weren't negative. Though there was sadness, disappointment, and hatred, their stories weren't sad, disappointing, or hateful. Themes of joy, pride, self-confidence, growth, gratitude, self-transcendence, and fulfillment came through just as strongly, often prevailing in the reflective minds of these women telling their stories from the other side. 💆‍♀️ As normalization continues, an important but subtle shift occurs. The consumer perspective evolves from just normalizing having a problem to normalizing doing something about it: treating, healing, or managing it. Here, we unlock a new sense of motivation - this time not rooted in shame but in a true sense of empowerment. 🦋 If you haven't already, you can download the full report at the link below (and you definitely should!)

Whew, where to start?... My year-long internship with Gorilla 76 ended a couple of weeks ago, and with graduation wrapping up last week, I’ve been able to reflect a bit more on this past year. And here’s what I’ve been thinking about: 1️⃣ G76 has set a HIGH bar. With rockstar teammates, a company culture with core values that are practiced and celebrated every day, an HR department that actually cares, and so much more, this first marketing experience of mine has set the standard for the rest of my career. 2️⃣ I’ve learned so much this past year It was hard to reflect on my improvement when I was in the thick of it, but it’s been a lot easier to look back on it all these past two weeks. From barely knowing anything about marketing to getting comfortable within a media buying role, I’m extremely grateful for the trust and teaching of SO many of the Gorillas who helped me get there. Nobody is less than an expert, and they’re all smart cookies. But most importantly, they were patient and kind enough to spend the time needed to get me where I am now. The moral of the story: find amazing teammates and teachers. 3️⃣ The people make the company Answering “the people” to your favorite part about the job sounds cliche, but there’s a reason it’s such a common answer. From whatever aspect, whether it’s talent, kindness, collaboration, etc, it really is the people who make Gorilla an amazing company and made this past internship such a wonderful experience. - P.S. On a final note, I’ll be setting up a Calendly around mid-June, and I would love to meet and connect with any marketers who’d be willing to share their experiences and roles. That way, I can continue to learn and meet some cool people:) So, keep an eye out for another post around then!

Excited to share an important project I've been working on with my classmates in my International Human Rights class at Drew University! Our group delved into the complex issue of unaccompanied minors crossing the United States border and the troubling reality of child trafficking. Together, we conducted in-depth research, analyzed data, and collaborated to bring awareness to this critical human rights issue. Our findings have been published in an article on WorldPoliticsDataLab.org, thanks to the dedication of our professor Carlos Yordan and the hard work of our team. This project has been an eye-opening experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an important conversation. I'm thrilled to share that I've completed the Inside LVMH certification program with LVMH! This 8-week journey took me through 4 comprehensive modules: - LVMH and the luxury industry - Luxury & Sustainability - Creation & Branding - Retail & Customer Experience - Operations & Supply Chain As someone pursuing a career in Computer Information Systems, I wanted to explore my passion for fashion and luxury. This program not only deepened my understanding of the industry but also showed me the importance of pursuing multiple passions beyond our professional aspirations. Additionally, I was fascinated to discover how the principles I'm learning in my academic courses apply to the luxury industry. I was struck by the parallels between LVMH's commitment to excellence and the attention to detail required in software development. The importance of understanding customer needs and preferences in retail and customer experience resonated with the user-centered design principles I'm learning in CIS. Moreover, the module on Operations & Supply Chain highlighted the significance of efficient logistics and supply chain management, echoing the importance of data management and analytics in CIS. This program showed me that seemingly disparate fields can intersect in meaningful ways. I'm grateful for the new perspectives and insights gained, and I look forward to applying them in my CIS studies and future career.
