“From October 2007 through November 2008, I simultaneously ran two business development campaigns with Arie. He and I developed a strategic focus for partnering Nuvelo's non-core drug discovery programs, aligning Nuvelo’s business and scientific strategies for clear and compelling partnering communications. Our out-licensing efforts encompassed monoclonal antibodies to treat leukemia and lymphoma as well as a platform of biologics to up-regulate Wnt pathway signaling for a variety of autoimmune, oncology, gastrointestinal and bone indications. In these campaigns, we interacted with over 130 pharmaceutical and biotech companies, including all the top 20 pharmas, traveling to Asia, Europe and throughout the US. Arie was consistently held in the very highest esteem by the scientific licensing groups that we interacted with. I would like to mention in particular GSK’s ImmunoInflammatory Center for Excellence in Drug Discovery in Greenford, England which progressed to due diligence and key terms discussions with Nuvelo on the strength of Dr. Abo’s leadership of the Wnt therapeutics program. Arie has over 15 years experience in the biotech industry. His work is published an average of 3 times per year in high impact, refereed journals including Science, PNAS, Nature and Cell. He is one of the most creative and integritous scientists I have worked with over the course of my 15 year career in biotech business development. I have no hesitation recommending him to any company looking for a dynamic leader of its drug discovery efforts.”

Proceedings: Debilitating Eye Diseases
Stem Cells Translational Medicine
Debilitating eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa currently represent a large unmet medical need that could potentially be addressed by stem cell therapy. A number of novel stem cell-based cellular therapies are now under development to treat a variety of eye diseases. The approaches being taken by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, together with its grantees, are discussed.
