⚠️⚠️⚠️ One lesson of this past week in DC : flows are moving away from emerging and developing economies. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Not the only issue behind the growing North/South tension but it is playing a role. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Time to SERIOUSLY rethink the way we approach things. Quoting NK Singh and Larry Summers with whom we discussed over dinner thanks to Center for Global Development in their recent Project Syndicate oped : « World Bank shareholders have not raised capital, substantially changed financing practices, or taken other bold steps. The International Monetary Fund is on net withdrawing funds from the developing world; the idea of comprehensive debt relief has gone nowhere; and financial defaults have been avoided only by the moral default of slashing health and education spending. Every individual plays a significant role in building trust and the reputation of an organization. Harshal Patel, the CFO of Quant Mutual Fund, has resigned amid SEBI's front-running investigation. While there is no news yet directly linking Harshal to front-running, the sequence of events suggests a connection. What is front-running? Front-running is an illegal practice where a broker, dealer, or fund manager uses non-public information to place their own orders before a large trade is executed. When mutual funds decide to invest in a stock, the stock's price can rise due to the large deal. Those with insider information can buy the stock before the big trade and profit from the price increase. Should you quit quant Mutual Fund? No, there is no need for a knee-jerk reaction. Harshal was not involved in managing the funds, so his departure will not impact the fund's investment philosophy. Quant has consistently outperformed in several categories, and I expect this to continue. The front-running issue might have a negligible impact on Quant investors' returns. Since SEBI's findings are not yet released, we need to keep an eye on the final outcome. But all of this leaves a bitter taste. This pain is felt across the ecosystem. As retail participation in the equity markets is rising, we wish we didn't have to hear this news. PS: Another reason why passive investing via ETFs and index funds are better! As private markets secondary strategies increasingly raise and deploy capital globally, India, one of the larger and more liquid markets, with increasing foreign and domestic private market interest, is primed for secondary market investments from global, Asian-regional and what I see as more India-focused secondary fund managers, across venture capital through private equity. GP-led deals have also increased, with global players such as Pantheon, Neuberger Berman, StepStone Group, HarbourVest Partners, Adams Street Partners, CF Private Equity, Schroders Capital, AlpInvest Partners all executing or evaluating India deals. That being said, we are still seeing challenges in liquidating positions with many of the India funds raised between 2005 and 2011, where performance as well as heavy currency devaluation have impacted saleability. Its been 2 weeks since IMpower Incorporating FundForum event happened yet the vibrant effect and resonance of minds working on wealth creation is still active. AI and tech adaption is irreversible and bound to happen across all cores in Finance industry - be it accounting, governance, compliance, data validation, risk management, administration or to the extent of fund / asset management and opportunities identifications. 2. Relations, returns and resolution for green are going to be pillars for coming decades. With unprecedented times like COVID, geopolitical issues and changing climate conditions - things that will matter always with great importance are people & nations' relations with each other, sustained & well respected procedures till actual returns in hands and last but not the least - money flows will have commitment towards planet's responsibility. 3.Its Time to be bold & look beyond the obvious/temporary situational plays. World is still in steroid of quantitative easing and subsequently risen fixed income rates but as we move towards 2030 and beyond, the growth and its sustenance will come from innovations, what can be new and be part of people's lives for next few decades, the radical changes that encapsulate behemoth of opportunities - one must ponder upon without Bias or prejudice. 4. Single Family offices with large ticket sizes , even though they are facing paradox of choices and are over approached - with their experience and more formal system coming into their investment decision journey making them more aware and sound. Formalization of set ups, tools, checklists & frameworks along with "trusted expertise" partnerships are under adaption across the globe. 5. Indian growth story : The World now realizes India as important global trade partner and European companies specially engineering manufacturing companies are putting extra efforts and capital to India so as to maximize benefit from Indian growth . Bosch, ZF engg, Schaffler, Schneider electric are live great examples as their Indian arms are listed in India and trying to make India a global manufacturing cost center hub with Indian engineering workforce. The FT published a Lex column commenting on the trend of MBA graduates seeking opportunities to acquiring lower-middle market companies ($15 mn to $100 mn in value) via a Search Funds. In our experience there's also seasoned managers who are seeking similar businesses through such structures and offer a larger set of potential interested buyers in the lower-middle market U.S. space. Good to see stakeholders such as BlueMark driving more robust impact reporting in the industry. Still today though, we see many impact reports in the industry forgeting the most important metric... Voices from the beneficiaries themselves! Collecting beneficiary-centric data from the field is key to establishing the success (or failure) of a project. Too often impact investment neglects empowering beneficiaries by giving them a voice that can shape the investment products and services that affect their livelihoods. #impactmeasurement #Transparency #socialimpact

I had a great conversation at #InVentures with our portfolio companies Myra Arshad (ALT TEX), Madison Savilow (Carbon Upcycling Technologies) and Matthew Alexander, CPA, CA (Future Fields) speaking on Scaling Climate Tech for Global Impact: Lessons Learned from Investors & Founders. Some key takeaways from our conversation: 1. Find great, early commercial partners to help. They can show you the ropes and really accelerate your know-how and growth. 2. Always have a supply-chain integration in mind when scaling up on the manufacturing and commercial side. 3. There's a lot of moving puzzle pieces when you're first starting out. Sometimes you have to get creative with your funding and milestones. Prioritize and don't be afraid to be scrappy. Big thank you to everyone who attended the panel and for the great conversations.

Is India moving towards premium products? India is a story of many Indias and while consumption from the bottom of the pyramid is slowing, the middle/upper class is spending like never before leading to the rise of premium products. Consumer goods manufactures have shifted their focus from the mass market. The recent inflation has affected the mass market sales as prices went up across products while economic stress in low to middle income groups still exists. Recently more than 70% of the products launched by HUL were in the premium segment. Around 60% of all products launched by Parle are in the premium product category. 65% of all new personal care product launches were in the premium segment for ITC. While new age D2C brands are known for launching premium products, this is the first time incumbents have focused on premium products to such an extent. Skincare is leading the premiumization wave with 75% of the value contribution coming from premium skin care products. The wave can also be seen in the spirits industry with every 1 in 2 buyer leaning towards premium products. Spirits priced over ₹1,000 have grown four times faster than those priced below ₹500. A similar rise of premiumization can also be observed in other categories such as smartphones, vehicles, large screen TVs, housing, refrigerators, electric vehicles, and travel.
