“It’s not always about the money: Analyzing intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors for active entrepreneurs to switch to academia”
8th annual conference of the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Toronto, August 2015
While elegant simplicity is a great starting point, there’s an important step before moving into action: shifting your mindset. While elegant simplicity is a great starting point, there’s an important step before moving into action: shifting your mindset. There is a basic difference between academic and entrepreneurial mindset.Academics move slowly, deliberately and cautiously whereas entrepreneurs are fast and they quickly move forward. Academics study the cause of the problem while entrepreneurs are obsessed with solutions. Academics are embedded in shrinking resources and culture of constrain. On the other hand entrepreneurs are more driven by creating possibilities.Academics are focused on patters whereas entrepreneurs are driven by exceptions. Finally, people in academia loathe promotions whereas entrepreneurs live to sell.
In spite of these drastic differences, there has been a good evidence of people moving to entrepreneurial ecosystem from academia. These people, generally termed as “Academic Entrepreneurs” are becoming aware of the fact that mindset is like a light switch. They can turn the entrepreneurial mindset ‘on’ to bring their passion project to life. However, without any linked literature, the concept of “entrepreneurs turned academia” looks chaotic. This paper intends to bring some light to current trends relating to why active successful entrepreneurs turn towards academia. We are a group of three graduate students of entrepreneurship at Brown University who have interviewed 17 such people over 4 countries and three continents to identify intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for entrepreneurs to change their career path and become active academics. The proposed study is meant to cover all angles by identifying decision making factors as a main basis for transition from entrepreneurial to academic ecosystem. The study is then used as the main pillar on which to build a distinct characterization of the concept under examination and to disentangle this notion from the knot in which many entrepreneurship threads have been entangled.Other authors

Use of Surface Plasma Resonance device as a novel point of care diagnostic system
Using Groove slit groove technology developed here at Brown University, we believe that multiple biomarkers can be detected simultaneously and within relatively short period of time . Application of this SPR technology can be effectively used in case of Cancer and more specifically to lung cancer where not single biomarker is associated with the disease. With sensitivity as high as Biacore device and small sample size, we aspire to change diagnostics is done in terms of money, time and sample…
