How can you source deals more effectively as a venture capitalist?
One of the most important pieces of advice I ever heard was a bit contrarian -- from Reid Hoffman's book "The Startup of You." The book talks about the way professionals network -- always seeking to speak to those above them -- "upward." But sometimes those in other areas, ie junior staff, can be the most important people to speak to. Think of today's youth -- they look at things differently, bring different life experiences to the table, and have a completely different mindset. They see different possibilities than we do. One of my best professional experiences came from a mentee, who told me about a UN opportunity. I ended up working with heads of state, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ambassadors and other world leaders for several years.

How do you decide what to invest in?
As a VC, we may see a company that is solid, but the founder was unable to communicate that to us, so everyone misses a great opportunity. Because we see so many pitches, it helps when we become invested through a great story - of course, the company and idea have to be very strong. An example: a founder approached me with a medical device. He was a doctor who was treating a new mother who was in her early 20s. After delivering her baby, she had complications that led to her death. Losing a patient, especially a new mother, was extremely distressing. This is what led to a massive pivot in his career -- to become an entrepreneur. I didn't learn this until several conversations in and it expanded the way I saw his commitment and passion.

The case provides an opportunity to examine the impact of climate change on society, potential solutions to this complex challenge, and the growth of a start-up high technology company bringing disruptive technology to the marketplace.
The case explores issues associated with disruptive technology-driven change in a large, highly successful industry with many powerful vested interests. It concludes with questions surrounding trade-offs between corporate versus social responsibility when addressing climate change.
The case discusses challenges associated with growing a start-up high technology company including proof of concept, financing, scaling and globalization are highlighted, as are challenges related to successful navigation of the "technology hype cycle" and commercialization of what promises to be disruptive technology.
The case also provides an overview of the energy and the clean technology industries, and their regulatory contexts. It discusses drivers and consequences of environmental degradation attributed to climate change.
Motivations and objectives of the prominent co-founders; Graciela Chichilnisky, creator of the carbon market enshrined in the emissions treaty of the United Nations Kyoto Protocol; and Dr. Peter Eisenberger, a distinguished professor of Earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University with deep energy industry experience, and their executive team are explored. -
