The Challenge theme changes annually and during my tenure, covered the modeling homelessness and hunger in Pittsburgh with an aim to change the outlook for individuals who are or will be homeless and those who suffer from food insecurity. The Challenge culminates with a one-week, hackathon-styled competition. Teams of 4 to 5 graduate students compete and deliver data-driven solutions. Students are challenged to (1) frame the problem, (2) model and synthesize the data, (3) visualize the data, and (4) present recommendations. I chaired an Advisory Board to steer the challenge creation and to provide expert advice for the competition plus access to resources (data and/or technology). The CMU/Pitt Enterprise Creation Team was a joint effort by Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh was a committee jointly chaired by the President of CMU and the Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. The team focused on the development of a tech-based economic development strategy.

The PRA partnership comprises 50 private and public sector leaders and economic development professionals from across the region, who work together to attract capital investment and create jobs in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Apangea Learning, Inc. (aka Think Through Math) was a distance learning company providing online math supplemental tutoring solutions for middle and high schools in the United States. The company offered one-student-to-one-teacher differentiated math instruction programs through the integration of proprietary tutoring technology and online certified teachers. Apangea was acquired by Imagine Learning in 2016.

The Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) program is an investment in the future leader. LDI is an eight-month long program for high-potential young professionals. This creative and innovative leadership training program has served as a model for several others around the country.
