The Challenge theme changes annually and during my tenure, covered the modeling homelessness and hunger in Pittsburgh with an aim to change the outlook for individuals who are or will be homeless and those who suffer from food insecurity. The Challenge culminates with a one-week, hackathon-styled competition. Teams of 4 to 5 graduate students compete and deliver data-driven solutions. Students are challenged to (1) frame the problem, (2) model and synthesize the data, (3) visualize the data, and (4) present recommendations. I chaired an Advisory Board to steer the challenge creation and to provide expert advice for the competition plus access to resources (data and/or technology).
