Tuesday Takes: Equity and Inclusion in Healthcare Design When was the last time you saw a disabled person portrayed in an architectural rendering? How about a person wearing a hijab, turban or kippah? How many times have you been instructed to provide "code minimum"? Or heard someone complain that Accessibility Guidelines are making the toilet footprint too large? Healthcare architects play a vital role in shaping the physical environment that supports healing, yet our solutions often are framed by the specific questions we are asked to address, and we end up coloring within the lines set by others. In healthcare design, the conversation around equity and inclusion is about more than just creating equal access - it's about ensuring that our facilities actively dismantle barriers and meet the diverse needs of every patient and community. From universal design principles and visual representation in publications, to culturally sensitive designs that honor the unique backgrounds of our patients, every decision impacts how inclusive our healthcare environments truly are. As architects and engineers, and as hospital administrators, we have the opportunity - and responsibility - to engage communities in the design process, to address disparities in resource allocation, and to champion environments that not only deliver care but also foster health equity. "AI is not meant to replace interior designers, but it can help you visual a space or generate images." It's difficult to imagine trying to teach AI the concept of "harmony" or producing images that are up to building code. AI struggles to get room name spellings correct (See image below).
