Sis, it’s not you, the organizational infrastructure of ABA is broken! When the standard service delivery models were created, the demand was not at the extent it is now! BCBAs are being OVERWORKED. 🛑 Why the ABA Infrastructure Needs Urgent Reform 🛑 The field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is experiencing unprecedented demand. While the establishment of the BCBA, BCaBA, and RBT roles has helped standardize and improve service delivery, the current infrastructure is struggling to keep up. The lack of insurance reform surrounding the BCaBA position is a significant factor contributing to the strain on our system. The Three-Tier Model in ABA 1. BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) • Established: 1998 • Role: Independent practitioners conducting assessments, developing intervention plans, and supervising BCaBAs and RBTs. • Current Challenge: High caseloads and increased administrative responsibilities are leading to burnout among BCBAs. 2. BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) • Established: 2004 • Role: Assist BCBAs by providing behavior-analytic services under supervision. • Current Challenge: Many organizations are hesitant to hire BCaBAs due to the lack of insurance coverage for their services, despite their critical role in supporting BCBAs and ensuring quality service delivery. 3. RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) • Established: 2014 • Role: Implement behavior-analytic interventions under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. • Current Challenge: While the RBT role has helped alleviate some of the workload, the rapid increase in demand for ABA services means that BCBAs still face high supervisory burdens. The Impact of Insurance Limitations The hesitation to hire BCaBAs due to insurance constraints is exacerbating the workload of BCBAs. Without adequate mid-tier support, BCBAs are stretched thin, which can lead to overexertion and burnout. This issue not only affects the well-being of BCBAs but also compromises the quality of care provided to clients. Why We Need BCaBA Inclusion Including BCaBAs more fully in the insurance model would provide a crucial buffer for BCBAs. It would distribute the workload more evenly and allow for more sustainable practice. The BCaBA role is essential for maintaining a balanced and effective ABA service delivery system. Recognizing and supporting this role through appropriate insurance reforms can save the field from burnout and ensure continued high-quality care. Call to Action As we approach nearly a decade since the implementation of the RBT role, it’s clear that our infrastructure must evolve. We need insurance reforms that acknowledge the importance of BCaBAs. Let’s advocate for these changes to create a sustainable future for ABA practitioners and the clients we serve.

"ABA is abuse" For sure, there have been some terrible practices in ABA over the last 50+ years. Currently, this is not the norm, at least not in my experience. The #1 thing I find myself coaching parents on during parent consultation sessions is how to create a home life rich in positive reinforcement, how to minimize coercive or punitive parenting practices, and how to cultivate a more loving, supportive relationship between parents and their children. BCBAs all over this country are doing the same thing. Every. Single. Day. Killing all ABA practitioners online without acknowledging how much LESS punishment and coercion is occurring in homes across America as a direct result of the stellar work these practitioners do is just dishonest. To minimize the viewpoint of behavior analysts is to take out the allies who have a professional prerogative to fight coercion when they see it. BCBAs, RBTs, and anyone else devoting their professional life to providing behavioral support to underserved and marginalized groups--Don't lose heart. Families all over the country, especially in underserved areas need your help. Let's go!

ABA aims to provide those it works with (children and adults alike) the tools to improve their communication, socialization, and self-care skills. Here are a few additional indicators that families can look for to help narrow down their search: ✅️ Transparency and Communication: A reputable ABA provider will maintain open lines of communication with families. Regular updates on the child’s progress, transparent billing practices, and clear communication about policies and expectations can significantly enhance trust and cooperation between families and providers. ✅️ Staff Credentials and Training: Ensure that the staff, including technicians and BCBAs, have appropriate credentials and ongoing training. Providers who invest in continuous professional development for their team are more likely to deliver up-to-date and effective therapy. ✅️ Customized and Evidence-Based Programs: Look for providers who emphasize individualized, evidence-based interventions tailored to the specific needs of each child. They should be able to articulate their treatment approaches and how they align with current best practices in ABA. We chose to learn EMDR because we felt a deep connection to its potential to help those trapped by trauma. It wasn't part of our standard doctoral education but was something we pursued to better understand and address the root causes of issues like OCD, panic attacks, anxiety, and low self-esteem. By viewing these through the lens of trauma, we found a more resonant and effective approach for our patients, allowing us to offer deeper, more meaningful support. From the ASAN: "The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) is an institution in Massachusetts. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), mental health disabilities, and learning disabilities live there. Both kids and adults live at the JRC. Many autistic people live there. Some people at the JRC are forced to wear an electric shock device. This device is used to punish the person wearing it. The device punishes people by giving them electric shocks. These electric shocks are very painful. The JRC shocks people for small things like refusing to take off their jackets or stimming. People with disabilities and our allies have been fighting to stop the JRC. We want to stop people at the JRC from getting shocked. We’ve been working together to try to stop the JRC for more than 10 years." Join our campaign. Fact: We need more BCBA Sleep Specialists 🐨⁠ ⁠ Outside of the basic need for better sleep among most families, here's why specifically a BCBA Sleep Specialist is important to have:⁠ ⁠ 💤 Sleep problems are prevalent among the clients Behavior Analysts assist daily, especially for those in the neurodivergent community. These issues impact physical and mental health across all ages and can play a part in family dynamics.⁠ ⁠ 💤 Families consistently struggle to find adequate support for their neurodivergent loved ones, often exhausting options before finding the actual help that will truly move the needle.
