In a May 15th status conference, Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), and National Hockey League (NHL) representatives voiced concerns about Diamond Sports Group’s lack of a renewal deal with Comcast, its third-largest distributor. ⚾️ Comcast's customers lost access to Bally’s regional sports networks in late April over cost and channel placement disputes. The cutthroat power struggle within US Soccer is plunging the sport into a downward spiral, with MLS at the forefront of the controversy. Accusations of MLS deliberately sabotaging the USL in a bid to cling onto its dominance are rife, exposing a desperate grasp for power. This calculated move by MLS comes as no surprise, considering its ongoing assault on the USL's modest strides in lower league soccer. The recent demise of USL San Diego serves as a grim reminder of the ruthless tactics employed by MLS to crush any potential competition. Such ruthless maneuvers not only stifle the growth of the sport but also erode the very essence of healthy competition that soccer thrives on. Instead of nurturing an environment of fair play and rivalry, MLS's actions reek of a monopolistic agenda aimed at controlling markets, ultimately tarnishing the integrity of the beautiful game. https://lnkd.in/eEmjB5db

Soccer refereeing isn't just about making calls; it's about leadership. I've been a soccer referee since I was 13 - and have been reffing NCAA D1 Soccer for over 12 years in Big West, Pac 12, Big 12 & WCC & More. Here's how the field teaches us to lead: 🗣️ Clear Communication:** Refs communicate decisions clearly, just like leaders should articulate visions and goals. We approach things calmly. ⚖️ Impartiality:** Like refs, leaders must be fair and unbiased, fostering trust and inclusivity. We never care who wins games - we care about making sure the players on the field are kept safe and are having fun. ⏱️ Decisiveness:** Refs make split-second decisions under pressure, teaching leaders to act confidently in tough times. Remember- by not making a decision...you ARE making a decision. 💪 Resilience:** Refs face criticism but persevere. Leaders too must bounce back from setbacks. People may not agree with you or like you all the time, but they must listen. 📚 Continuous Learning:** Refs stay updated on rules. Leaders embrace learning and adaptation. FOR THE GRACE OF THE GAME   That's my twist on the cliche "for the love of the game."   There's a very good reason that #1 draft picks go to teams. Anyone who follows sports, not just WBB, knows this. The strategy is to give losing and/or struggling teams first dibs at creme de la creme talent. And I say creme de la creme for a reason - draft picks are all superior talents no matter the # they go. Teams with the #1 pick get the opportunity to draft the talent they think they need to continue building their teams to be challengers and competitors. Now, with that said, let's get into it...   Since the women's Final Four last month, I have given no less than a half dozen media interviews sharing my insights about all things WBB, college, and pros, and the moment/momentum that is currently unfolding. Of course, Caitlin Clark and the "Caitlin Clark Effect" was often a topic of curiosity and priority for the journalist that I've spoken to, and rightfully so.   Clark is a undoubtedly generational talent. When asked if she was changing the game of basketball, my answer was an emphatic NO. She's a great player. She's broken records. She's made her mark. But there were great players before her and there will be great players after her. After all, whose records do we think she broke, and who will eventually break her records - other great players? So, no, Clark has not changed the game of basketball, she has changed the business of basketball. That's a good thing, a great thing in overall, but not so much for her.   Clark is a rookie in the WNBA - arguably the most elite WBB league in the world with only 144 players across 12 teams (although, imminent expansion will help). She clearly loves the game of basketball and takes her craft seriously. Clark did not become a great college player by osmosis. She has put in and continues to put in, and will put in the work to rise to the challenge and the occasion, but this young lady needs some grace and space to grow and evolve as a professional WBB player which is a very different and more physically demanding thing than being a college player.   The season ticket sellouts, packed arenas, expanded media coverage, and moving games to larger venues are all fantastic for WBB. However, the pressure from these developments is overwhelming for any single player. Clark aims to be one of the greatest basketball players ever, and she’s well on her way. Her college achievements were hard-earned. But like a top high school player who must elevate their game to excel in college, she now faces the challenge of raising her game again to succeed at the professional level.   Clark will stumble and she will soar. She will falter but then she will fly. She will have setbacks and comebacks. This is the ebb and flow of the game - not just the game of basketball but the game of life.
