A perspective from a “Retail Infantry Commander” There are many levels to the command chain. Some of us are out here actively producing results because we are directly affected by the outcomes. (Pause…. Read that again) Please remember that some of us don’t get to just go home at the end of the day. We are generating the revenue that is the labor budget. We are generating the revenue that is THE BUDGET…. Without the revenue generators, there is NO REVENUE to budget. The appreciation I have for the folks scrubbing the bathrooms, emptying trash cans, or cleaning the parking lot of a truck stop any where in this country (God be with you) far, FAR exceeds my appreciation of the people who simply go home at the end of their day, unaffected by the results, or lack there of, from the day. **I heard someone say “don’t bite the hand that feeds” referring to corporate v field employees. I was enraged. Somewhere along the line we became very confused about who is the biter and who is the feeder.**

I believe the best type of leader is not legacy-focused but instead quality-leadership focused and allows any possible legacy of their actions to be a natural byproduct of their tenure. These types of leaders take on the reigns of leadership, lead and serve by example, and empower their teams to make great things happen.

Analysis Paralysis....ever heard of it? It's the need to have everything planned out to perfection before you take action. I have seen a number of Freight Agents fall victim to this over the year. The potential is there, they could make it...but they get in their own way trying to plan everything, research everything until they could recite every detail back in a court of law, then figure out the best strategy. And waiting so long to just pick up the phone or send the email. I am a planner...so I could very easily fall victim to this mentality myself. Sometimes it just feels comfortable to research and plan instead of doing. But, I have a plan for that. (Isn't is ironic, don't you think..)I put actual productivity goals in place for myself every single week so that I don't fall victim to just thinking about something and never getting off the starting block! If you have been a Freight Agent for 3 or 6 months and haven't moved a load, or if you haven't hit your goals for 3 or 6 months in any area..stop right now! Look at your productivity each day and decide to win. Change the narrative of planning for it and just do it. You may not know everything yet, but I guarantee that you will learn more by doing the action for just one day than you would have with a week of research! So, get after it! Mondays don't win themselves!

Leaders forget that leading others should be revered more than anything else. Being the leader means that you have been placed in a position to serve others. Too often, I have seen leaders duck and cover, throw their people under the bus, throw their positional weight around, and instead of leading from a place of service, lead from a place of ego when things get rough. You are privileged to be able to direct, shape, and focus people’s potential to a specific result. When you are given the responsibility to lead, you are given an excellent opportunity to influence many people’s lives positively, a responsibility you should never take for granted. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment
