Leadership is key to having successful cross-functional teams. Understanding the overall goal at hand and what each team member brings to the collaboration, allows us to combine different types of expertise as well as viewpoints/perspectives tending to push us to think outside of the box. In my experience as a manager or director, cross-functional teams have helped with customer experience and service, improved bottom lines, ROI, and allowed us to have an advantage on a competitive edge. Communication is important as it is the center of understanding each other on the team. We always looked for ways to improve when there were failures, and there will be. Learning to navigate a new area of any business will always come with learning curves.
