“Allyson is an incredible manager. She brings out the best in her people, doesn't tolerate nonsense, acts with long term strategy in mind and engages all stakeholders in meaningful ways. She consistently acts with the best short and long term interests of taxpayers and expertly walks the line between public servant and steward of non-renewable cultural resources.”

You're torn between history and progress in urban planning. How do you navigate the delicate balance?
I am not torn at all between history and progress. Europe, Asia and the Middle East have done a solid job of working with both. I have seen structures from the 17th century modernized for today's needs without destroying historic character. The problem is that we start with "can't" instead of starting with "can".

You're torn between history and progress in urban planning. How do you navigate the delicate balance?
This isn't an either/or situation. Europe has managed to modernize buildings hundreds of years old. For some reason, we in the United States think everything has to be demolished and built new instead of being more creative with historic structures.

What role does practice play in enhancing public speaking skills?
I don’t think you need to practice in front of a mirror. I practice what I want to say in my head while working out or taking a walk. The mirror would make it worse. I also make sure to use inflection in my voice to keep things interesting and sometimes pause for effect. For people who are really nervous an improv class could help. In many ways public speaking is an acting job.

The application of region-scale pedologic and geologic data to archaeological predictive modelingmodeling: an example from Washington State, Pacific Northwest, USA
Geoarchaeology 2009
A Geographic Information Systems-based (GIS) model of archaeological site distribution to aid in the discovery of presently unknown archaeological sites within the state of Washington was developed. Located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, the project area includes approximately 71,500 square miles, roughly the equivalent to 75% of the land area within the entire UK. To complete this study across such a large land area we applied 1:24000 scale pedologic and geologic data along…
To complete this study across such a large land area we applied 1:24000 scale pedologic and geologic data along with a limited range of other environmental variables and the known locations of recorded archaeological sites to create a predictive model of archaeological site locations. Once the environmental variables were determined, archaeological site location data from the recorded archaeological sites was used in combination with field-based archaeological survey locations and historic-period Indian encampment sites digitized from Government Land Office maps in order to develop the model. While limitations to the model include the inability to accommodate landform transformations and broad ecologic change through time, we consider the model to be very strong for the middle to late Holocene period and moderately strong for the upper Pleistocene through middle Holocene period.
