FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  ARNOLD “ARNIE” WEISS’ STATEMENT ON JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY MIAMI, FL (JUNE 19, 2024) – Today we celebrate the final emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865 more than two and a half years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation.   Even though it would not be until December when the 13th amendment would end slavery throughout the United States it is important that we take time to not only celebrate the joy of freedom but also to remember the lengths to which those who opposed it were willing to go to preserve slavery. Unfortunately, we currently find ourselves in a climate where these same forces obstruct progress and threaten with violence (and in some cases actions) if they do not get the political outcomes they want.  This is why we have a 6-3 Supreme Court that doesn’t reflect the political or demographic realities of a country where a majority has voted Democratic in 7 of the last 8 Presidential Elections.  These same people continue to gerrymander districts and limit the voices of blacks, browns, and all people who do not agree with them.  They have kept women from attaining equality under the Constitution and continue to chip away at their rights to privacy and to make their own medical decisions. The people of Miami-Dade face a real choice in August and I know that they will vote for me because I have a plan for actually working to improve accessibility to the ballot box for all legally eligible voters; and protecting the ideals that all Americans and the Democratic Party should stand for.  Willis Howard has made it clear that he will keep the status quo at the Department despite the obvious and significant budget and leadership consequences of just building on top of the existing structure.  JC Planas has spent his entire career fighting to protect and further the voting goals of the Republican Party and also promises to maintain the status quo at the Department.  ###  For more information and press inquiries please contact: media@arnieweiss.com

Are you on TikTok? You may experience TikTok censorship. I posted a CNBC video clip today about Biden signing the TikTok ban. The platform immediately took it down because it claimed I violated community guidelines—not positive. I posted another one and it only has 35 views because TikTok won’t share it with the TikTok community. But yesterday I posted another CNBC video clip about the noncompete clause and it has more than 700,000 views. This is a perfect example that TikTok is in control. Claims it wants users to have freedom of speech, but it won’t practice what it preaches. #TikTokBan #journalism #TikTok #politics #business #socialmedia #Biden #CallingAllJournalists #journalism

I started my career one year before 9/11, and the wars that came after that have shaped my life and work, as they have for so many other people as well. In terms of how the storytelling product is for those who are entering their first news market, I think a lot of us who've been out of college before COVID didn't realize how journalism students learned how to write, shoot and edit during the pandemic. At least those who were experienced in the journalism field, had a strong or a way better background on how to write, shoot and edit unlike those college students who were navigating how to do journalism during an actual pandemic, just like the rest of the news industry. Also, you don't write, shoot or edit every semester you're in college. I volunteered through my mass communication school to do events so I can get hands on with a camera my first semester of college. Most mass comm students at my alumni didn't touch a camera until second semester of your sophomore year. So I imagine that those who went to school during the pandemic will get better overtime but it's going to be tough for them and those who are in college now, will be just fine as things are still getting back to a sense of normalcy in mass comm schools. The big cause of people not being interested in journalism is MONEY. As a first generation college student who before I went to college, was sleeping on deflated air mattresses with holes using it as a layer between me and the floor 12 years ago, I was used to not having any money. My first two gigs in the Richmond, VA market I was making $10 an hour as a part-time editor and either $32-35k at my first full-time job as a photog. Too broke to really go far outside of Richmond unless I planned a year in advance and made too much to get food stamps or any government assistance. If I didn't start my news career ten minutes driving from my mother's trailer, who knows if I would still be in news today. I had to Doordash before I worked a 2:30pm-11:30pm shift before the pandemic started. Richmond is a market that hovers in the mid-50's and when I got my first Baltimore TV job, I was making 45k. Baltimore is a market that usually hovers in the mid-lower 20's. To me at that time as someone who wasn't used to making a lot of money, it was a big jump in the pay I was getting. Of course, when you move to a bigger city, the more expensive everything gets. It wasn't until I got to my second Baltimore station, my fourth station, where I'm finally making a livable wage and that came after earning a raise being at a union station. I'm worried about the current talent pool of future journalist because we're always in need of great journalist, but the salaries at most TV stations doesn't balance out with the need for every day living essentials we have to have. I knew that starting out, you're not going to make that much money in journalism. Many professors said that while I was in college. But you can't expect people to take jobs in news when they're trying to combat the effects of inflation, especially on student loans and trying to have every day living essentials.

Did you know that ABC turned a $500K investment in Disneyland into the #6 show on television and a 15x return on investment? In 1954, Walt Disney and ABC struck a deal that reshaped the entertainment industry. 📺🎡 ABC invested $500K + guaranteed $4.5M in loans for a 35% stake in Disneyland & 10 years of food concession profits. In return, Disney produced the weekly TV series "Walt Disney's Disneyland" to promote the park. 🤝 The impact was immense. ABC went from zero shows in the top 30 to the #6 show within a year. The live broadcast of Disneyland's opening was a major TV event. For Disney, the deal funded his "harebrained" theme park vision while ABC badly needed the audience Walt could draw in. ABC's $500K investment turned into a 15x return when Disney bought their stake in 1961 for $7.5M. As sanity is restored to the streaming market, it will be interesting to see what partnerships arise, particularly around audience monetization and content sharing. 🎬💡 #media #entertainment #partnerships #innovation #Disney #ABC
