The Model Minority isn’t a Model of Health - But is Often Seen as One    It’s common practice for health data to group together Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders but simplifying a diverse group into one racial category can often obscure crucial insights, and even contribute to the harmful “model minority” myth.     Take cancer data: When grouped together, Asian Americans’ leading cause of death is cancer. But for Indian Americans specifically, deaths due to heart disease were *twice* as common as cancer. We have a lot of work to do when it comes to health equity across the U.S.             Racial health disparities exist in every state. Even in states with above average healthcare systems for all racial groups, Black and Native Americans are far more likely to die early from preventable deaths than white and Asian Americans. Racial disparities in health are driven by factors inside and outside state health care systems. "The policy choices that federal, state and local leaders have made over many decades have led to economic suppression, unequal educational access, and widespread housing segregation, all of which have contributed in their own ways to worse health outcomes for people of color." Racial health disparities are further perpetuated by less insurance coverage and unequal access to quality primary care. We have a long way to go to achieve health equity — but it is possible. According to the report, we can bridge the gap by ensuring universal, affordable and equitable healthcare coverage; strengthening primary care systems and improving delivery of services; and investing in social services. Let's work together to ensure everyone regardless of race or ethnicity can access their full potential to live long, healthy lives.

We all want to be able to put healthy food on the table for ourselves and our families. But many of us face significant barriers to doing so. This week, Congress is again considering cuts to #SNAP, a policy that is proven to improve food access and reduce poverty. This comes at a time when new research from the Urban Institute shows that current SNAP benefits are not keeping up with rising food costs. The study—funded by RWJF—shares the latest data on the gap between meal costs and SNAP participants’ monthly benefits, a gap that remained high in 2023 despite that year’s cost-of-living adjustment to benefits. With the end of pandemic-era social supports, many Americans are struggling to afford the #childcare that they need for caregivers and children alike to thrive. The good news? Across the country, states are stepping up with innovative solutions to bring childcare costs down. From reallocating oil and gas revenues to fund early childhood initiatives in New Mexico, to lowering daycare fees for parents who work in the childcare industry in Kentucky, states are finding creative ways to ensure more families have access to childcare programs. Happy Pride🏳️‍🌈 Big thank you to the Pride@PATH people resource group and all the LGBTQIA+ public health workers, advocates, and allies who are working hard to improve LGBTQIA+ inclusion at PATH, in the global health sector, and beyond. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to equity and justice, but in the face of these challenges, I am proud that PATH continues to be driven by the idea that everybody deserves to live a healthy life, no matter who you are, where you live, or who you love.    Examples of PATH's recent work where this message is especially clear: - In 2024, we became a member of Workplace Pride , an international platform for LGBTQIA+ inclusion at work. This is so true. When I was looking for a new job, the state of the hiring process shocked me. It lacks decency, empathy, respect, and accountability. If I was leading a hiring process, I would do the following: - Put the salary range in the job posting. It's 2024. If you want an equitable, transparent hiring process, you should not be leaving it out. - Along that line of thinking, share your benefits up front as well. Put them right on your Careers web page. Stop being cagey. - If you want candidates to do an assignment and/or presentation, compensate them for their time. Especially if the task will take longer than one hour to prepare/complete. - If you cannot interview candidates and hire someone within a month of posting a job, there is something wrong with your hiring process. More than three or four interviews to fill a position? Are you serious? (I know someone who had to do 9 interviews and a presentation for a role that wasn't CEO/President. That is INSANITY.) - Have the decency to let candidates know if you are moving on in a TIMELY FASHION - don't ghost them or keep them waiting for weeks if you're not going to hire them. Part of leadership is being able to make tough decisions and handle the aftermath thoughtfully and transparently. If you can't do that in the hiring process, you shouldn't be in charge of hiring. We need to put humanity back into the hiring process. This is a good place to start.
