Central America is rich in renewable energy resources and there exists tremendous opportunity to harness this potential. 🌎 The region has a total installed generation capacity of 12GW. Guatemala and Costa Rica have the largest capacity, with approximately 3GW each. The falling prices of renewables, their abundance in the region is an attractive option for meeting growing regional energy demand and for providing energy security at a competitive cost. 🔌 The demand for electricity in data centers is on the rise, and with it, the need for natural gas is expected to skyrocket. Stanley Chapman, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Natural Gas Pipelines at TC Energy Corporation—North America's leading operator of natural gas pipelines—highlighted in a recent earnings call that by 2030, the gas demand from electricity generation for data centers could increase by up to 8 billion cubic feet per day. Another 40 GW of solar and wind capacity coming to the U.S. power grid this year could generate ~10 GW of baseload-equivalent generation because of its intermittency. Will the wave of renewable installs be enough to flatten natural gas’ power gen gains this summer? Yes, likely, say analysts. However, one wrinkle is Canada, according to Wood Mackenzie. The northern neighbor has uncharacteristically flipped to a net importer of U.S. power (5 GW swing in April) and could provide uplift to U.S. generation this summer. The order not only marks the first collaboration of Seaway7 and Ampelmann in the Americas but will also see the first tour of duty of the E5000 outside of Europe, said the Dutch company. According to Ampelmann, the E5000 is the biggest motion-compensated system in the world.
